In both cases, people dress up to sit down and passively, vicariously experience what's happening on the platform. They're both experiential, maybe even transformative on an emotional level, and both are often followed by a meal at a nearby restaurant during which one can reflect on or critique the performance. Sometimes the audience has to step over homeless people or otherwise hurting people en route, which can be unpleasant.
