I'm trying to think of any case where the Bible doesn't say more than what most people really think it says!

Funny how Doc hung onto tithing even though he taught that you were free from the rest of the Law. No scripture teaches tithing on monetary wages, only on agricultural produce raised in the Land of Israel. Lev.27:30-34 teaches that tithing, like all the rest of the law mentioned in that context, came from Mt. Sinai, and was given by Moses to the Children of Israel, not the Eskimos, the Native Americans, or the Celts (Doc said he was one). Only Levites could take the Biblical tithe. In Acts 15 the apostles said nothing about Gentiles needing to tithe on anything. Priests in ancient Israel never tithed. Believers in Christ are the priesthood of the New Covenant (I Pet.2:5,).

I think it was just word association. He heard "on earth" and so he thought "what are other things you can be on?" And then he realized "you can be on fire."

It may have been completely random, OR it might be because he has a vivid recollection that Jesus (if he's been taught that it was Jesus) came and helped out Rack, Shack, and Benny. It doesn't take hearing that story more than once to remember that Jesus was on fire.

Otherwise, I'm stumped. Did you find out where he got that from?

Yet another confounding variable.

And you are correct, the stats that people ususally use do not take that into account.

Using that as the inspiration for another thought experiment, I can envision a stable solution where nearly everyone in society is happily and stably married and yet 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Everyone simply divorces their first spouse and then remarries and stays in that marriage.

Knowing in that scenario that 50% of all marriages have ended in divorce tells you practically nothing about the true state of marriage in that culture.

My question is what percentage of married people actually get divorced, aka what is an individual's chance of getting divorced when adjusted for outliers who get divorced multiple times? Are we calculating the divorce rates of all marriages all in the same batch, even though second marriages perform statistically worse than first marriages?
