{"id":1099,"date":"2008-04-23T06:48:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-23T14:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/?p=1099"},"modified":"2009-07-20T08:22:39","modified_gmt":"2009-07-20T16:22:39","slug":"fifteen-minutes-and-counting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2008\/04\/23\/fifteen-minutes-and-counting","title":{"rendered":"Fifteen Minutes and Counting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of our worship leaders, Awa, has some of the most quotable lines of anyone I&nbsp;know.<\/p>\n<p>As exhibit A, I submit the following excerpt from an email to our group last&nbsp;week:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIt\u2019s spring quarter people, time to procrastinate so you can enjoy the beautiful warm weather and the beautiful peeps of Chi Alpha.  I mean, we are a good looking bunch\u2026I say that in truth and with humility\u2026&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How magnificent is that language?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, at least one reporter at the Stanford Daily agrees with me: Awa was quoted not once but twice <a href=\"http:\/\/daily.stanford.edu\/article\/2008\/4\/22\/aHawaiianSliceOfParadise\">in a recent article<\/a> as was Chris, another of our students.<\/p>\n<p>For context, <a href=\"http:\/\/daily.stanford.edu\/article\/2008\/4\/22\/aHawaiianSliceOfParadise\">the article<\/a> is about a Hawaiian Lu\u2019au on campus.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n\u2026kahlua pig \u2026 is traditionally prepared by filling the pig\u2019s abdominal cavity with hot stones, then placing the pig in a pit containing hot stones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m sure Santa Clara County wouldn\u2019t have been too open to that idea, so we hand-shredded the 40 lbs. of pork ourselves using forks,\u201d said Lu\u2019au Co-Chair Awapuhi Dancil \u201810. \u201cThe hardest part was figuring out how much of each item to buy. People at Costco kept staring at us since we had 40 tomatoes, pineapples and pounds of salmon.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then later&nbsp;on,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe members of the Hawai\u2019i Club poured our heart and soul into this event, working at 100 mph,\u201d Dancil said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And the contribution from&nbsp;Chris:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Perhaps the most interesting side dish was the poi, pounded taro root that is kneaded into a smooth paste, traditionally meant to be eaten by scooping it out of a bowl with one\u2019s fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still haven\u2019t made up my mind about the poi,\u201d said Chris Olivares \u201810. \u201cBut everything else is absolutely delicious. I came last year and had to come again to support friends and watch the great dances. And how often do you get to have authentic Hawaiian food that\u2019s really good?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So a big shout out to you both for your 15 minutes of&nbsp;fame.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although next time you\u2019re talking about slaughtered pigs and root paste try to figure out a subtle way to work in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/xastanford.org\/\">Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship<\/a> meets at 7:30pm every Wednesday school is in session in building 300\u2013300.\u201d I\u2019m not quite sure how to do that elegantly, but there must be some way. Maybe something like \u201cOf course, slaughtered pigs cannot atone for our sins. They are merely tasty.
