A library \u2014 a place of books and thought \u2014 would be more appro\u00adpri\u00adate, the pro\u00adfes\u00adsors opined. But Jane Stan\u00adford stood firm.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe church is the only insti\u00adtu\u00adtion that makes or has made or pre\u00adtends to make a stand against immoral\u00adi\u00adty in all its forms,\u201d she said. \u201cEdu\u00adca\u00adtion does not; nor does that sci\u00adence in which you are inter\u00adest\u00aded and which you con\u00adsid\u00ader all-pow\u00ader\u00adful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sad\u00adly, the church has (in my esti\u00adma\u00adtion) fall\u00aden far. Few would regard it as the heart of the uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty today, and the spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal menu offered at the Church has broad\u00adened beyond mea\u00adsure: both the founder of the Ba\u2019hai faith and the Dalai Lama have spo\u00adken there.
