{"id":167,"date":"2003-04-15T07:32:26","date_gmt":"2003-04-15T15:32:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/archives\/2003\/04\/15\/stanford-limits-freshman-access-to-alcohol\/"},"modified":"2003-04-15T07:32:26","modified_gmt":"2003-04-15T15:32:26","slug":"stanford-limits-freshman-access-to-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2003\/04\/15\/stanford-limits-freshman-access-to-alcohol","title":{"rendered":"Stanford Limits Freshman Access to Alcohol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was both tickled and saddened when I read the news in the Stanford Daily today: <a href=\"http:\/\/stanforddaily.com\/?page=content&amp;id=10888&amp;repository=0001_article\">Stanford To Ban Alcohol At All-Freshman Dorm Events<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Beginning next year, Stanfords all-freshman dorms will no longer be allowed to serve alcohol at events in their lounges, hallways or outdoor areas.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Seems reasonable to me, especially since almost all freshmen are way under 21 and therefore are not allowed to drink alcohol. Nonetheless, the move produced controversy: <i>Junior Nic Kanaan, a resident assistant in Otero, said he believes the policy will have unintended negative consequences. \u201cI think this new policy will make a kind of introverted drinking culture that could potentially be more dangerous, because its behind closed doors and you cant see whats going&nbsp;on\u2026\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the university simply reiterated its logically compelling position: <i>Administrators counter that allowing drinking in freshman dormitories is illegal, detracts from efforts to create a safe and comfortable atmosphere and has failed to prevent serious alcohol-related incidents among freshmen in recent years.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I can\u2019t believe this is even an issue.
