I was out of town all day yes\u00adter\u00adday and got back late enough that I did\u00adn\u2019t both\u00ader to check any sports scores. I had had some inti\u00adma\u00adtion of the rude infor\u00adma\u00adtion that await\u00aded me in the San Jose Mer\u00adcury News sports sec\u00adtion (owing to an ill-timed con\u00adso\u00adla\u00adtion call from the Chi Alpha leader at Berke\u00adley<\/a>).<\/p>\n

So we lost Big Game. Again. And we lost Big Game big. Almost as bad\u00adly as it has ever been lost (although out\u00adranked by our 1930 41\u20130 romp over Cal).<\/p>\n

I think the prop\u00ader atti\u00adtude is con\u00adveyed in Mark Pur\u00addy\u2019s col\u00adumn<\/a>: <\/p>\n

Oh, it could have gone worse for Stan\u00adford on a windy, blus\u00adtery after\u00adnoon. But only if a tree had fall\u00aden on The Tree.<\/p>\n

Cal\u2019s 41\u20136 vic\u00adto\u00adry Sat\u00adur\u00adday was so awful, Stan\u00adford fans spent the sec\u00adond half leav\u00ading in droves \u2014 in lux\u00adu\u00adry cars, actu\u00adal\u00adly, but in drove-like for\u00adma\u00adtion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
