He\u2019s anoth\u00ader per\u00adson God has con\u00adnect\u00aded us with. Ray is on the advi\u00adso\u00adry board for Stan\u00adford Chi Alpha, and is a nice guy to boot.<\/p>\n<p>I say he\u2019s a Stan\u00adford physi\u00adcist, but it\u2019s a lit\u00adtle more com\u00adpli\u00adcat\u00aded than that: he\u2019s actu\u00adal\u00adly paid by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mit.edu\">M.I.T.<\/a> yet works at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slac.stanford.edu\">Stan\u00adford Lin\u00adear Accel\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtor<\/a>. Evi\u00addent\u00adly there are only three or so real sites in the world you can do high-ener\u00adgy par\u00adti\u00adcle physics at (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slac.stanford.edu\">SLAC<\/a> is one, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fnal.gov\/\">Fer\u00admi<\/a> is anoth\u00ader, and <a href=\"http:\/\/welcome.cern.ch\/welcome\/gateway.html\">CERN<\/a> is the last of the real\u00adly big ones). So many of the peo\u00adple who work at these research facil\u00adi\u00adties are actu\u00adal\u00adly research physi\u00adcists for insti\u00adtu\u00adtions in oth\u00ader parts of the world. Inter\u00adest\u00ading, no?<\/p>\n<p>Ray\u2019s a pret\u00adty neat guy: his hob\u00adbies include read\u00ading, geol\u00ado\u00adgy, ham radio, local his\u00adto\u00adry, gener\u00adic out\u00addoorsy type activ\u00adi\u00adties, and serv\u00ading as a vol\u00adun\u00adteer reserve police offi\u00adcer when he gets the chance (he\u2019s had to stop that because of his research sched\u00adule).<\/p>\n<p>Also, Ray shared a unique method of cal\u00adcu\u00adlat\u00ading a 25% tip with me. Mul\u00adti\u00adply the pre-tax bill by 10 and divide it in half 3 times. That comes out to be the same as 10\/8 (or 125%) and is pret\u00adty easy to cal\u00adcu\u00adlate.
