Gene Scott<\/a> died yes\u00adter\u00adday, and I feel oblig\u00aded to say some\u00adthing for some strange rea\u00adson. I guess it\u2019s because I\u2019m always struck by the vague\u00adly over\u00adlap\u00adping areas of our lives.<\/p>\n

First, he was at one time an Assem\u00adblies of God min\u00adis\u00adter in my dis\u00adtrict<\/a>. He left the denom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion years back (in good stand\u00ading, sur\u00adpris\u00ading\u00adly enough), but the con\u00adnec\u00adtion is still there.<\/p>\n

Sec\u00adond, Dr. Scott had a con\u00adnec\u00adtion with Stan\u00adford University\u2013he earned his doc\u00adtor\u00adate here in 1957 and was appar\u00adent\u00adly once pro\u00adfiled for the cov\u00ader sto\u00adry of the Stan\u00adford alum\u00adni mag\u00ada\u00adzine (this seems to be an undig\u00adi\u00adtized issue or else I would link to it).<\/p>\n

Third, his min\u00adistry was by its nature a mon\u00adey-ask\u00ading sort. His meth\u00adods were way over the line (some allege immoral and ille\u00adgal), although he was pret\u00adty fun\u00adny about it: \u201cI some\u00adtimes get asked about what hap\u00adpens to all the mon\u00adey that comes in to this min\u00adistry. Let me tell you what hap\u00adpens to it. I spend it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Fourth, he was eccen\u00adtric. That\u2019s putting it mild\u00adly. If you\u2019ve seen his show you know what I mean, and if you haven\u2019t there\u2019s no way you would believe me\u2013for instance, one of his pecu\u00adliar wor\u00adship songs was Kill a Pis\u00adsant for Jesus<\/em> (I do not, sad\u00adly, have the lyrics). While I applaud the use of the under\u00aduti\u00adlized word pis\u00adsant<\/a> , the song gives me pause. If you\u2019ve got a few min\u00adutes, read over this old arti\u00adcle from the LA Times: The Shock Jock of Tele\u00advi\u00adsion<\/a> to get a feel for his unique min\u00adistry style.<\/p>\n

The Assem\u00adblies of God, Stan\u00adford, fundrais\u00ading, and eccen\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. That\u2019s real\u00adly all we had in com\u00admon as far as I can deter\u00admine (that, and we were both Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia white males). In some ways I admire him tremen\u00addous\u00adly, and in oth\u00ader ways I shud\u00adder when I think of him. Either way, I con\u00adsid\u00ader him a dis\u00adtant cousin in min\u00adistry.<\/p>\n

I hope he\u2019s in heav\u00aden. If so, I imag\u00adine there are a lot of sur\u00adprised peo\u00adple hav\u00ading some very unusu\u00adal con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtions with him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
