Extend\u00aded fam\u00adi\u00adly mem\u00adbers and friends all sur\u00advived but some lost every\u00adthing.<\/p>\n<p>When I was a kid we used to joke about how stu\u00adpid it was to build a port city below sea lev\u00adel. Every year it seemed that New Orleans would have a near miss with a hur\u00adri\u00adcane and we\u2019d start jok\u00ading about how dumb we Cajuns were. We knew with all the cer\u00adtain\u00adty child\u00adhood pro\u00adduces that New Orleans would be wiped off the map one day. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, when you\u2019re a kid you don\u2019t real\u00adly think about all the suf\u00adfer\u00ading such a cat\u00ada\u00adstro\u00adphe will entail. The news out of New Orleans is stag\u00adger\u00ading. The scari\u00adest thing is that it could eas\u00adi\u00adly have been much worse. Times like these remind us of just how frail and frag\u00adile all of human\u00adi\u00adty\u2019s accom\u00adplish\u00adments real\u00adly are.<\/p>\n<p>Any\u00adway, all this leads me to won\u00adder what jokes kids in Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia make about the \u201cBig One\u201d. New Orleans final\u00adly got a bul\u00adlet it could\u00adn\u2019t dodge. I won\u00adder when Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adni\u00ada\u2019s is com\u00ading\u2026 I hope I\u2019m not here to see it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.convoyofhope.org\/\">Con\u00advoy of Hope<\/a> is doing a fine job of help\u00ading peo\u00adple.
