In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

To that end, on Fridays I\u2019ve been sharing articles\/resources I have found helpful recently in thinking about broader cultural and societal issues (be sure to see the disclaimer at the bottom).   1. Downwardly Mobile For Jesus<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>Lawrence Lanahan<\/span>, <\/span>Al Jazeera): this is a really well-written and engaging story that weaves together faith, race, poverty and justice.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. If you are in the social sciences, read this journal article from <\/span>Behavioral and Brain Sciences<\/span><\/i>:<\/span> Political Diversity Will Improve Social Psychological Science<\/span><\/a> (summary by one of the authors <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>). There is an article with related insights at <\/span>The American Sociologist<\/span><\/i>: <\/span>How Ideology Has Hindered Sociological Insight<\/span><\/a>. There are many implied religious issues at play besides the political ones which are the focus of these two pieces.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Sad truths: <\/span>The Decline and Fall Of American Political Debate<\/span><\/a> (John Davidson, <\/span>The Federalist<\/span><\/i>). Davidson says \u201cour fragmentation and insularity has reached a dangerous tipping point: we no longer agree on what\u2019s real.\u201d Read especially the section labeled \u201cTake Two Recent Examples.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. A surprising<\/span>ly fascinating article:<\/span> More Titillated Than Thou: How the Amish Conquered the Evangelical Romance Market<\/span><\/a> (Ann Newumann, <\/span>The Baffler<\/span><\/i>). Really. <\/span><\/li>\n
  5. An unexpected perspective: <\/span>Why The Best Thing This Generation Can Do Is Put Down The Drink<\/span><\/a> (Alexia LaFeta, <\/span>Elite Daily<\/span><\/i>): the comments section, unsurprisingly, is filled with vitriolic objections. Some of the language in the article, incidentally, is less than refined and genteel.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. This is Timi\u2019s mom: <\/span>Funke Opeke: Nigeria\u2019s Cyber Revolutionary<\/span><\/a> (Femke van Zeijl, Al Jazeera). I hope her name is pronounced the way I am pronouncing it in my head, because that would be awesome. Also, Timi\u2019s mom is a boss.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass<\/span> the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating.
