In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the&nbsp;world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, on Fridays I\u2019ve been sharing articles\/resources I have found helpful recently in thinking about broader cultural and societal issues (be sure to see the disclaimer at the bottom). May these give you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar. Shooter Left Behind Online Portrait Of A Lonely Youth WIth A Grudge Against Religion<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to one eyewitness quoted in the LA Times, \u201cIf they said they were Christians, they were shot again\u201d: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/nation\/la-na-oregon-shooting-live-updates-htmlstory.html?update=84578901\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon college shooting updates: Gunman Chris Harper-Mercer killed 9, had 13&nbsp;guns<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon Live: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/pacific-northwest-news\/index.ssf\/2015\/10\/gunman_in_oregon_college_shoot.html#incart_maj-story-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gunman in Oregon college shooting executed classmates, saying \u2018I\u2019ll see you soon\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to an eyewitness in this story he did ask students about their faith before killing them, but did not specifically target Christians.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, the NY Times article <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/10\/02\/us\/oregon-shooting-umpqua-community-college.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;module=a-lede-package-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news&amp;_r=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon Shooting At Umpqua College Kills 10, Sheriff Says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not even mention the word Christian or God, nor does Inside Higher Ed\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2015\/10\/02\/oregon-community-college-site-third-worst-mass-shooting-college-campus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tragedy at Umpqua<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For completely different news, read <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/20\/opinion\/sunday\/seth-stephens-davidowitz-googling-for-god.html?_r=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Googling For God<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NY Times, Seth Stephens-Davidowitz): file under \u201cinteresting but not that surprising\u201d (although I am surprised at the relative positions of questions 1 and 2 &nbsp;\u2014 I assumed they were swapped)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/douthat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/24\/pope-francis-and-the-not-quite-secular-west\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pope Francis and the Not-Quite-Secular West<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NY Times, Ross Douthat): Secularism\u2019s grip on America is weaker than it appears.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v37\/n18\/amia-srinivasan\/stop-the-robot-apocalypse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop The Robot Apocalypse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Amia Srinivasan, London Review of Books): the title is misleading \u2014 this is an insightful critique of the effective altruism movement from the&nbsp;left.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huh. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/priceonomics.com\/the-correlation-between-arts-and-crafts-and-a\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Correlations Between Arts and Crafts and a Nobel Prize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rosie Cima, Priceonomics).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating.
