In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the&nbsp;world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, on Fridays I\u2019ve been sharing articles\/resources I have found helpful recently in thinking about broader cultural and societal issues (be sure to see the disclaimer at the bottom). May these give you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar. The quote I read was from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/religion\/3512686\/Children-are-born-believers-in-God-academic-claims.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children Are Born Believers in God, Academic Claims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a fascinating follow-up: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2008\/nov\/29\/religion-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s Stick To The Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which is a rebuttal to criticism of Barrett\u2019s research).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the current events department<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/2015\/10\/07\/boy-12-among-dozen-tortured-and-crucified-by-isis-in-latest-atrocity-says-aid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boy, 12, among dozen tortured and crucifed by ISIS in latest atrocity, says aid group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Fox News). Bad stuff is happening.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/south-carolina-churches-flooding_561565f3e4b0fad1591a7308\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Carolina Churches Are Doing More Than Praying For Flood Victims <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Huffington Post). Good stuff is happening in the midst of bad&nbsp;stuff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/nation\/la-na-oregon-shooting-churches-20151004-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Embrace This Pain,\u2019 Pastor Urges After Oregon Shootings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (LA Times). The pastor\u2019s daughter was one of the shooting victims (she was not killed, merely wounded).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the all-things-sexual department:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I assume you have already seen the Stanford study. You might not have looked at the similar national study which came out recently. You can read a summary (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2015\/09\/22\/nearly-1-4-college-women-say-they-have-been-sexually-assaulted-survey-finds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 1 in 4 College Women Say They Have Been Sexually Assaulted, Survey Finds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Inside Higher Ed) or the full thing: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aau.edu\/registration\/public\/PAdocs\/Survey_Communication_9-18\/Final_Report_9-18-15.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report on the AAU Campus Climate Survey on Sexual Assault and Sexual Misconduct<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (it\u2019s a PDF). The authors state in the article that they have likely overestimated the prevalence of sexual assault because of self-selection bias in the responses and do not know by how much. On a related note (from before this study was released), Megan McArdle \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloombergview.com\/articles\/2015-06-04\/what-we-don-t-know-about-false-claims-of-rape\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What We Don\u2019t Know About False Claims of Rape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/biology\/2015\/10\/homosexuality-may-be-caused-chemical-modifications-dna\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homosexuality May Be Caused By Chemical Modifications to DNA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Science News, Michael Balter). The study is not conclusive, but is the kind of finding I would expect based on the research to&nbsp;date.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/10\/the-man-who-dismantled-the-ex-gay-ministry\/408970\/?google_editors_picks=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Downfall of the Ex-Gay Movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (The Atlantic, Jonathan Merritt). Towards the end the article assumes that rejecting a technique is equivalent to rejecting a hope. I know many ministries that don\u2019t believe in reparative therapy that nonetheless believe in transformation. See, for example, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.religionnews.com\/2015\/10\/06\/no-therapy-christ-can-change-lgbt-lives-say-evangelical-leaders\/?utm_content=buffer98850&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No \u2018therapy\u2019, but Jesus can change LGBT lives, say evangelical leaders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Religion News Service, Cathy Lynn Grossman).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worth reading \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/article\/2015\/10\/evangelicals-wont-cave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evangelicals Won\u2019t Cave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (First Things, Russell Moore): The second through sixth paragraphs are especially good. I see people making the mistake he refers to constantly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the Stanford department: this Daily op-ed caught my eye: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanforddaily.com\/2015\/10\/08\/me-kk-petition-to-student-activities-and-leadership-to-end-open-membership\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petition To Student Activities and Leadership to End Open Membership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There was a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stanforddaily.com\/2015\/10\/09\/the-importance-of-open-membership-for-stanford-voluntary-student-organizations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swift nuh-uh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the administration. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/student-activities-amp-leadership-remove-the-open-membership-requirement-for-voluntary-student-organizations-at-stanford\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petition itself is on change.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For the record, Chi Alpha has no desire to exclude people from our ministry. I do, however, think that Stanford\u2019s open membership policy needlessly abridges students\u2019&nbsp;constitutional right to&nbsp;freedom of association. As a private institution, Stanford is allowed to do that\u2026 but it is unwise to do&nbsp;so.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating.
