In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the&nbsp;world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, on Fridays I\u2019ve been sharing articles\/resources I have found helpful recently in thinking about broader cultural and societal issues (be sure to see the disclaimer at the bottom). May these give you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar. You might recall that Robinson is <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/shc.stanford.edu\/events\/american-scholar-now\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speaking at Stanford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> soon and also that I mentioned <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/articles\/archives\/2015\/sep\/24\/marilynne-robinson-fear\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her essay \u201cFear\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;a few emails back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wondering why people are fleeing Syria? Check out <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/10\/14\/9525469\/syrias-war-a-5-minute-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Syria\u2019s War: A Five Minute History<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a Vox video). This is really well-done.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also violence erupting in Israel. Foreign Policy asks <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2015\/10\/14\/can-anyone-prevent-a-third-intifada-israel-palestine\/http:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2015\/10\/14\/can-anyone-prevent-a-third-intifada-israel-palestine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Anyone Prevent A Third Intifada?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;Incidentally, if you wonder why people are skeptical of the way news concerning Israel is reported, take a look at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/424102\/returning-copy-desk-briefly-kevin-d-williamson?JA41BW7FdG3z5rxo.01\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Returning to the Copy Desk, Briefly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Kevin Williamson, National Review). It is a takedown of a NY Times article showing how much bias can creep into an apparently objective article (this is from the right critiquing the left \u2014 for counterexamples search for clips from the Daily Show). Bottom line: it\u2019s really hard to find trustworthy&nbsp;news about Israel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/lying-about-our-religion-and-other-problems-with-polling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lying About Our Religion, and Other Problems With Polling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Religion Dispatches). There really is a problem developing with polling, which is bad news because we rely upon polling in our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national life to tell us what the public thinks. Nate Silver is also worried about this \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/polling-is-getting-harder-but-its-a-vital-check-on-power\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polling Is Getting Harder, But It\u2019s A Vital Check On Power<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FiveThirtyEight).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An insightful observation from the \u201cLying About Our Religion\u201d article: \u201cIn a democracy with hundreds of millions of people, how do you know what the public thinks and wants? How do you figure out what binds them together, besides an annual obligation to the IRS and a love of fireworks? In short: how do you know what the public <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Like many hard questions, these problems have been rendered largely invisible, in no small part because \u201cThe Public\u201d and \u201cThe American People\u201d are favorite fictional characters for politicians and journalists, who speak of them without a trace of precision. So let\u2019s indulge in a quick reality check. The Super Bowl\u2014that national spectacle that unites us around the flickering LCD hearth\u2014had 115 million viewers in the United States last February; in other words, nearly two-thirds of us <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weren\u2019t <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watching it. The most-viewed political spectacle of the year, the State of the Union address, draws around 10% of the population. Barack Obama won the 2012 presidential election with 62 million votes, meaning that fewer than 20% of us voted for him. Pieces like this are very speculative. Interesting, but take it with a grain of&nbsp;salt.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating.
