In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the&nbsp;world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, on Fridays I\u2019ve been sharing articles\/resources I have found helpful recently in thinking about broader cultural and societal issues (be sure to see the disclaimer at the bottom). May these give you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar. Buckle your seatbelt.&nbsp;Without further ado, I give you the interesting things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/the-culture\/the-alcohol-blackout\/?utm_source=nextdraft&amp;utm_medium=email\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol, Blackouts, and Campus Sexual Assault<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Texas Monthly, Sarah Hepola): I think this is the most thoughtful secular piece I\u2019ve read on the issue. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConsent and alcohol make tricky bedfellows. The reason I liked getting drunk was because it altered my consent: it changed what I would say yes to. Not just in the bedroom but in every room and corridor that led into the squinting light. Say yes to adventure, say yes to risk, say yes to karaoke and pool parties and arguments with men, say yes to a life without fear, even though such a life is never possible\u2026 We drink because it feels good. We drink because it makes us feel happy, safe, powerful. That it often makes us the opposite is one of alcohol\u2019s dastardly tricks.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stream.org\/fatal-flaws-religion-generosity-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatal Flaws In That Religion And Generosity Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (The Stream, George Yancey). Yancey is a sociology prof. Related: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cheesewearingtheology.com\/2015\/11\/are-religious-kids-really-meaner-than-their-secular-counterparts-a-guest-post\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are Religious Kids Really Meaner Than Their Counterparts?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a social psychologist.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now for a ton of links related to the racial incidents and responses at Yale and Mizzou (which seem different to me but which happened in such close proximity that they are linked in the national dialog).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Cowen, an economist at George Mason University and one of my favorite public intellectuals (with whom I frequently disagree), has a thoughtful post up: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/marginalrevolution.com\/marginalrevolution\/2015\/11\/my-thoughts-on-recent-campus-fracases.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Thoughts On Recent Campus Fracases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This speech at Harvard by former ACLU president Nadine Strossan was given just before these two cases erupted into national news, and so has the advantage of not being reactionary: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/shorensteincenter.org\/nadine-strossen-free-expression-an-endangered-species-on-campus-transcript\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free Expression: An Endangered Species on Campus?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Money quote: \u201cIn short, when it comes to safety, our students are being doubly disserved. &nbsp;Too often, denied safety from physical violence, which is critical for their education, but too often granted safety from ideas, which is antithetical to their education.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbiamissourian.com\/from_readers\/from-readers-mu-faculty-member-shares-stories-of-racism\/article_69d9487c-8644-11e5-910b-238aa5321294.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MU Professor Shares Stories of Racism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Missourian, Cynthia Frisby): a thoughtful perspective from a Christian close to the scene. This is a window into the level of frustration and pain the protestors are speaking out of. Not specifically linked to the recent events (written a few weeks before them).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/truthonthemarket.com\/2015\/11\/10\/supporting-my-mizzou-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting My Mizzou Students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Thom Lambert). Thoughts from a law prof at Mizzou.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/11\/the-new-intolerance-of-student-activism-at-yale\/414810\/?google_editors_picks=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Intolerance of Student Activism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (The Atlantic, Conor Friedersdorf): I could easily imagine this Yale scenario happening at Stanford. If you only read one link this week, pick this one. (Dan Drezner from Tufts is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/posteverything\/wp\/2015\/11\/09\/a-clash-between-administrators-and-students-at-yale-went-viral-why-that-is-unfortunate-for-all-concerned\/?utm_source=nextdraft&amp;utm_medium=email\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slightly more sympathetic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only slightly).
