In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the&nbsp;world.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, on Fridays I\u2019ve been sharing articles\/resources I have found helpful recently in thinking about broader cultural and societal issues (be sure to see the disclaimer at the bottom). May these give you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar. Past emails are archived at <a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/category\/links\">http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/category\/links<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On this half-year mark, I give you the interesting things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/heinonline.org\/HOL\/Page?handle=hein.journals\/hjlpp27&amp;div=12&amp;g_sent=1&amp;collection=journals\">Religious Liberty and Human Dignity: Tale Of Two Declarations<\/a> (Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, Kevin Hasson). This article from 2003 argues that religious freedom is the fundamental freedom. It starts slow as it lays a foundation, but picks up about halfway through.<\/li>\n<li>While you\u2019re on Thanksgiving break, please <a href=\"http:\/\/registertovote.ca.gov\/\">register to vote<\/a> if you have not already done so. I strongly suggest you register as a Permanent Vote-By-Mail Voter, which simply means that you will receive a ballot in the mail before every election. It gives you plenty of time to research the candidates and issues from the comfort of your dorm room with your ballot in front of you. If you prefer to vote in another state then visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/student-voting\">http:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/student-voting<\/a>). If you\u2019re a citizen of another country, do whatever you\u2019re supposed to do&nbsp;there.&nbsp;\ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>Some global perspective:&nbsp;<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2015\/11\/16\/9744640\/paris-beirut-media\">Did The Media Ignore The Beirut Bombings? Or Did Readers?<\/a> (Vox, Max Fisher). As far as I can tell, this is factually correct. More interestingly, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2015\/11\/paris-beirut-terrorism-empathy-gap\/416121\/?google_editors_picks=true\">The Empathy Gap: Why Have The Paris Attacks Gotten More Attention Than The Beirut Bombings<\/a> (The Atlantic, David Graham): I think Graham\u2019s perspective is helpful&nbsp;although it understates the importance of perceived novelty. Remember how much coverage the Boko Haram kidnappings received? They were perceived as novel. A bombing in Beirut is (inaccurately) perceived as normal.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2015\/november-web-only\/why-only-53-christians-2184-syrian-refugees-resettlement.html\">Why Are There Only 53 Christians Among Americans 2184 Syrian Refugees?<\/a> (Christianity Today, Morgan Lee). This is a great analysis of the numbers. Takes into account factors I\u2019ve not seen discussed elsewhere. FYI, Condoleeza Rice, a nearby Christian with more than a little knowledge of national security issues, <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/condoleeza-rice-refugees-security\">thinks the US should take in more refugees<\/a>. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TUSK81\/status\/666361325782761473\">a tweet many of you will appreciate<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/gleanings\/2015\/november\/why-church-attendance-plunged-nepal-secular-constitution.html\">Church Attendance Plunges After Nepal Becomes A Secular State<\/a> (Christianity Today, Morgan Lee): this one is fascinating. India got angry that Nepal stopped being officially Hindu, and so stopped exporting fuel, and so Christians can\u2019t get to church. Wow.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/nov\/17\/china-accused-emasculate-christianity-secret-conference-communist-party\">China Accused Of Trying to \u2018Co-Opt and Emasculate\u2019 Christianity<\/a> (The Guardian, Tom Phillips and Harriet Sherwood): top Chinese leaders are nervous at the explosive growth of Christianity in the avowedly atheist nation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>More campus activism links: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefire.org\/obamas-abc-news-interview-transcript-on-missouri-protesters\/\">President Obama weighs in<\/a> (really).
