In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the&nbsp;world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that end, on Fridays I\u2019ve been sharing articles\/resources I have found helpful recently in thinking about broader cultural, societal and theological issues (be sure to see the disclaimer at the bottom). May these give you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar. Past emails are archived at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/category\/links\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/category\/links<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without further ado, I give you the interesting things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/1\/13\/10759874\/republicans-democrats-different\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Is What Makes Republicans and Democrats So Different<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Vox, Ezra Klein): I was skeptical of this piece, but it\u2019s insightful.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/01\/18\/recognition-annals-of-justice-paul-kix?mbid=social_twitter?reload\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognition: How A Travesty Led to Criminal-Justice Innovation In Texas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;(New Yorker, Paul Kix): this is a powerful article with a heartbreaking story at its center.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/gleanings\/2016\/january\/top-50-countries-hardest-christian-world-watch-list-2016.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Korea Gets Competition: The Top 50 Countries Where It\u2019s Now Hardest To Be A Christian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Christianity Today, Sarah <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zylstra). Sobering and sadly unsurprising. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 was the world\u2019s worst year for the persecution of Christians in the modern era. Until 2015 surpassed it.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w21828\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College Party Culture and Sexual Assault<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NBER, Lindo, Siminksi, Swensen): \u201cWe find significant and robust evidence that football game days increase reports of rape victimization among 17\u201324 year old women by 28 percent. Home games increase reports by 41 percent on the day of the game and away games increase reports by 15 percent.\u201d They propose parties associated with the game as a causal mechanism.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2016\/01\/06\/new-book-reveals-how-elite-phd-admissions-committees-review-candidates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside Graduate Admissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Inside Higher Ed, Scott Jaschick): if you plan to apply to grad school, read this. There is one revealing anecdote about how an admissions committee treated an application from a Christian college student. My takeaway: the professors tried to be fair but found it hard to do, and their stated concerns were mostly about the quality of the institution rather than the faith of the applicant. Troubling nonetheless.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shorter Pieces:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Christianity\/comments\/3z4vmc\/i_never_understood_why_going_to_church_made_you_a\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I never understood why going to church made you a hypocrite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rich Mullins): this is a short, beautiful observation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2016\/01\/13\/this-is-actually-what-america-would-look-like-without-gerrymandering\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is actually what America would look like without gerrymandering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Washington Post, Christopher Ingraham)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/video\/defog-car-windows-fastest-settings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fastest way to defog your car windows (and why it works)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [YouTube, Mark Rober] not a ton of use here in mild California, but some of you will live elsewhere before you&nbsp;die.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/583497\/researchers-keep-citing-these-retracted-papers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why researchers keep citing retracted papers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Quartz, Keith Collins):&nbsp;distressing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
