A. Carson, YouTube): Dr. Carson is one of my favorite scholars. This youtube clip is definitely worth three minutes&nbsp;of your&nbsp;time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/17\/opinion\/sunday\/hallelujah-college.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hallelujah College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Molly Worthen, NY Times): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing you\u2019ll run into with any of the campus activists that I\u2019ve encountered is this idea that human nature is a collection of identity categories, that I as a human being am composed of a gender identity, a sexual identity, a racial identity and so forth,\u201d he said. \u201cTheir perception of Christians, or of religious people more generally, is: \u2018O.K., these are people who have this one identity category, religion, and the religion they identify as is overstepping its bounds. It\u2019s telling my gender or sexual identity how to act.\u2019 The Christian response has to be: There\u2019s something more to what a human being is than just these collective attributes.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/gleanings\/2016\/february\/pastor-china-largest-church-jailed-crosses-gu-yuese-chongyi.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pastor Of China\u2019s Largest Church Jailed For Protesting Removal of 1,500 Crosses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Morgan Lee, Christianity Today). Note that he is the pastor of China\u2019s largest official church \u2014 there are underground churches that are much larger. The Communist Party must be getting nervous about the strength of Christianity in China if they are oppressing the state-sanctioned church as&nbsp;well.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cruxnow.com\/faith\/2015\/12\/30\/christians-in-latin-america-are-numerous-but-still-vulnerable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christians In Latin America Are Numerous But Still Vulnerable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (John Allen, Crux): a very strong article about Christian persecution in the western hemisphere. \u201cChilito was executed by a right-wing paramilitary and Castilla by a left-wing guerrilla group, proving that martyrdom in Colombia is an equal-opportunity enterprise. Globally, the two women are chapters in one of the most widespread human rights scourges of the early 21st century, which is lethal anti-Christian persecution. Though estimates vary widely, even low-end counts suggest that one Christian is killed for motives related to the faith somewhere in the world every hour of every&nbsp;day.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2016\/02\/mainstreaming-animal-personhood\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainstreaming \u201cAnimal Personhood\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Wesley J. Smith, First Things): this is something you should do some thinking about. Start by reflecting on Genesis 1:26\u201330, Genesis 9:1\u20136, Numbers 22:21\u201334, Proverbs 12:10, Jonah 4:10\u201311, and Matthew 6:26.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/volokh-conspiracy\/wp\/2016\/02\/04\/meyer-v-nebraska-as-told-by-the-lawyer-who-won-it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meyer vs Nebraska: As Told By The Lawyer Who Won It<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (David Kopel, Washington Post): this story of a 1922 Supreme Court decision absolutely sucked me in. It touches on issues of parental rights, public education, religious liberty, and nationalistic prejudice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/therebelution.com\/blog\/2016\/02\/3-ways-to-work-for-the-glory-of-god\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 Ways To Work For The Glory of God<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Christos Makridis, The Rebelution). Yes, this is written by our very own Christos. Good thoughts, Christos!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some comics that amused me:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMBC on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smbc-comics.com\/index.php?id=4005\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">divine intervention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloom County comic on dark matter and God: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/bloom-county\/2016\/02\/02\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/bloom-county\/2016\/02\/03\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Fuzzy on self-importance: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/getfuzzy\/2016\/02\/01\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/getfuzzy\/2016\/02\/02\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/getfuzzy\/2016\/02\/03\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the buildup is slow but the payoff is worth&nbsp;it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps a little too close to home for our seniors and recent alumni: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/BNeY7NP.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why we need roommates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
