The third picture is mind-blowing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2016\/02\/20\/transcript-rev-paul-scalias-eulogy-his-father-justice-antonin-scalia\/80667122\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transcript: Rev. Paul Scalia\u2019s Eulogy for His Father Justice Antonin Scalia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Paul Scalia, USA Today): it\u2019s rare to find a funeral sermon for a famous person that is this theologically rich. Being Protestant there are bits I would quibble with, but&nbsp;wow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/2016\/02\/what-conservative-gay-christians-want\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Conservative Gay Christians Want<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Dan Hitchens, The Spectator): a perspective rarely heard in mainstream media: \u201cWhen Shaw writes in praise of the \u2018real elements of beauty\u2019 in gay relationships, or laments how the C of E\u2019s \u2018hypocrisy\u2019 has \u2018hurt a lot of people\u2019, he sounds like a liberal Anglican. At other times, he sounds like anything but. Sex is \u2018not a small issue that we can afford to disagree on\u2019, he says; \u2018marriage between a man and a woman, union in difference, sex within that\u2019 is one of the most important \u2018pictures of God\u2019s love for us\u2019. The Bible starts with a marriage in Eden and ends with a marriage between Christ and the Church. \u2018It\u2019s not just a couple of verses in Leviticus that we need to change,\u2019 Shaw argues: reconstructing marriage would mean \u2018ripping out the heart of almost every part of scripture\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/campusministry.org\/article\/three-lies-every-campus-minister-must-silence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three Lies Every Campus Minister Must Silence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Paul &nbsp;Worcester, Campus Ministry Today): this article has an amazing close. Even if you skim the article, devour the testimony at the end. You never know the impact you&nbsp;have.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/falkenblog.blogspot.kr\/2016\/02\/an-economists-rational-road-to.html\">An Economist\u2019s Rational Road to Christianity<\/a> (Eric Falkenstein, personal blog): one man\u2019s journey to conversion. It\u2019s a bit long. The author\u2019s Ph.D. is from Northwestern University, he works in industry, and has published two well-received books. My favorite line is \u201cin the words of a famous short green deist, \u2018Do, or do not, there is no&nbsp;try.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From The Political Side<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2016\/02\/the-deliberator\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Deliberator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (M. Anthony Mills, First Things): A profile of a junior senator from Nebraska who thinks the Senate is becoming too efficient. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve heard this perspective before.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/np.reddit.com\/r\/politics\/comments\/47h1xi\/black_lives_matter_activists_interrupt_hillary\/d0d33e2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good explanation of nonviolent protest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (reddit): has an interesting example of how to end a zero-tolerance policy at a high school.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.getreligion.org\/getreligion\/2016\/2\/25\/in-battle-of-gay-rights-vs-individual-conscience-in-missouri-heres-a-surprising-winne\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Battle of Gay Rights Vs Individual Conscience In Missouri, Here\u2019s A Surprising Winner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Bobby Ross, GetReligion): a click-baity title, but a solid piece that explains the actual point of conflict better than most I have&nbsp;seen.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2016\/february-web-only\/god-loved-alexander-hamilton.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God Loved Alexander Hamilton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Susan Lim, Christianity Today) \u2014 history nerds pay attention \u2014 there\u2019s some good stuff&nbsp;here.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Random Research<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/amj.aom.org\/content\/early\/2016\/01\/05\/amj.2015.0008.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moral Symbols: A Necklace of Garlic Against Unethical Requests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Desai &amp; Kouchaki, Academy of Management Journal). I\u2019m not convinced, but I am intrigued.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S027277571630036X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Inputs are Outputs: The Case of Graduate Student Instructors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Bettinger, Long, and Taylor, Economics of Education Review): \u201cUndergraduates are more likely to major in a subject if their first course in the subject was taught by a graduate student .\u2026 Graduate students who teach more frequently graduate earlier and are more likely to subsequently be employed by a college or university.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
