One significant bit buried within it: \u201cNinety-four percent of respondents on 2013 surveys (commissioned by Mercy and conducted by independent firms) answered \u2018yes\u2019 to the question, \u2018Did Mercy Ministries help you transform your life and restore your hope?\u2019 Eighty-two percent said they were \u2018well adjusted to life\u2019 after leaving the program. And 85 percent said they had spent time at other treatment centers before Mercy, without long-term results.\u201d Those statistics should have been even more central to the&nbsp;story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2016\/05\/how-spirituality-helps-people-survive-hiv\/481560\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spirituality May Help HIV Patients Survive Longer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Emma Green, The Atlantic): interesting. The last paragraph is a reminder that one\u2019s assumptions greatly influence one\u2019s interpretations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-0501-renn-reverse-great-migration-20160501-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Has There Been An Exodus Of Black Residents From West Coast Liberal Hubs?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Aaron Ren, LA Times): \u201cThough results vary to some extent, the broad trend is clear: West Coast progressive enclaves are either seeing an exodus of blacks or are failing to attract them. Midwestern and Northeastern urban areas are attracting blacks to the extent that they are affordable or providing middle class economic opportunities. And Southern cities are now experiencing the most significant gains.\u201d I expect wildly divergent reactions to this. I found it very interesting. A&nbsp;related line of thinking:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/i.sli.mg\/yQH82F.png\">why colleges are the way they are<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amusing:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xfO1veFs6Ho\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College Kids Say The Darndest Things: On Identity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Joseph Backholm, YouTube): \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be hard to tell a 5\u20199\u201d white guy that he\u2019s not a 6\u20195\u201d Chinese woman, but clearly it is. Why? What does that say about our culture? And what does that say about our ability to answer questions that actually are difficult?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been&nbsp;addicted to the Babylon Bee lately. They\u2019re killing it. In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
