Every year our dis\u00adtrict spon\u00adsors an event called The Lay Lead\u00ader\u00adship Sum\u00admit<\/a>. It\u2019s a big con\u00adfer\u00adence designed to help church vol\u00adun\u00adteers do their jobs bet\u00adter. There are about 50 learn\u00ading tracks (each with four work\u00adshops) rang\u00ading from chil\u00addren\u2019s min\u00adistry to using the inter\u00adnet effec\u00adtive\u00adly to using light\u00ading and sound sys\u00adtems. We, of course, spon\u00adsor a col\u00adlege min\u00adistry track.<\/p>\n

I men\u00adtion all this by way of intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to men\u00adtion two peo\u00adple I inter\u00adact\u00aded with this week\u00adend: Dan Bet\u00adzer and John Abela.<\/p>\n

Dan Bet\u00adzer is a leg\u00adend in the Assem\u00adblies of God\u2013he\u2019s an incred\u00adi\u00adble speak\u00ader, a mis\u00adsions fanat\u00adic, and an extreme\u00adly suc\u00adcess\u00adful pas\u00adtor. He\u2019s also a bit of a hero of mine (his wife, inci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly, blogs<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Any\u00adway, I learned two things about him this week\u00adend:
\n1) he once lost his min\u00adis\u00adte\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal cre\u00adden\u00adtials for sev\u00aden years for flout\u00ading the hier\u00adar\u00adchy\u2019s rules
\n2) he\u2019s such an intro\u00advert that he keeps his office at 60 degrees so that peo\u00adple feel too chilly to hang around and chit-chat<\/p>\n

For the record, he and I have nev\u00ader had a con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion. I gleaned one tid\u00adbit from his ser\u00admon and anoth\u00ader from a friend of his.<\/p>\n

The sec\u00adond per\u00adson I met was John Abela<\/a>. John is a for\u00admer core mem\u00adber of the phpBB2<\/a> team and runs the most pop\u00adu\u00adlar con\u00adglom\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of Assem\u00adblies of God web\u00adsites in the world. I am told that his total band\u00adwidth exceeds that of all the nation\u00adal Assem\u00adbly of God web\u00adsites in every nation com\u00adbined.<\/p>\n

That tick\u00adles me. Many of our lead\u00aders attempt to lead by lim\u00adit\u00ading infor\u00adma\u00adtion and don\u2019t seem to real\u00adize that\u2019s no longer pos\u00adsi\u00adble. John has effec\u00adtive\u00adly done an end run on a ton of stu\u00adpid rules in the Assem\u00adblies of God and because he\u2019s a layper\u00adson no one can stop him\u2013he\u2019s got no cre\u00adden\u00adtials for them to revoke. I love it.<\/p>\n

He men\u00adtioned that he gets a phone call from some AG offi\u00adcial or anoth\u00ader about once a week ask\u00ading him to stop doing what he\u2019s doing. Even allow\u00ading for con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion\u00adal hyper\u00adbole, that sounds about right. He\u2019s mak\u00ading peo\u00adple ner\u00advous enough that we\u2019ve even had res\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtions at Gen\u00ader\u00adal Coun\u00adcil prompt\u00aded by one of his sites<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Any\u00adway, I just want\u00aded to say that I think John\u2019s a cool guy and that he\u2019s mak\u00ading our move\u00adment bet\u00adter by using the web to help peo\u00adple. Kudos to him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
