Shootings by police, shootings of police, the ISIS bombing in Baghdad, religious-liberty infringements, disgraceful political behavior and more. If you\u2019re feeling down, the first few links will be especially helpful to&nbsp;you.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/how-to-pray-in-our-time-of-national-crisis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Pray In Our Time Of National Crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Joe Carter, Gospel Coalition): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us are anxious and hurting. All of us are confused. When faced with this type of national cr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isis we may find it difficult to turn to our Comforter in prayer. We are used to going to God with our requests, but this time seems different. Some are reluctant to speak because they do not wish to reduce these issues to a hash-tag and they don\u2019t know what to&nbsp;do.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2016\/07\/end-needless-interaction-with-cops-during-traffic-stops\/490412\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">End Needless Interaction With Cops During Traffic Stops<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Conor Friedersdorf, The Atlantic): a shrewd, easy-to-implement suggestion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2016\/06\/cca-private-prisons-corrections-corporation-inmates-investigation-bauer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Four Months As A Private Prison Guard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Shane Bauer, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mother Jones): a very long but very engaging essay. \u201cI started applying for jobs in private prisons because I wanted to see the inner workings of an industry that holds 131,000 of the nation\u2019s 1.6 million prisoners. As a journalist, it\u2019s nearly impossible to get an unconstrained look inside our penal system. When prisons do let reporters in, it\u2019s usually for carefully managed tours and monitored interviews with inmates. Lest you think this is overstated, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icrc.iowa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/2012\/SOGIPublicAccom.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the official state document<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available for your viewing pleasure. Since this was the action of a commission and not the legislature or the judiciary it will likely be retracted quickly. Nonetheless alarming.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/gleanings\/2016\/july\/christianmingle-lawsuit-forces-site-to-add-options-for-gay-.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ChristianMingle Lawsuit Forces Site to Add Options for Gay Daters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Kate Shellnut, Christianity Today). I\u2019m not a fan of ChristianMingle, but this is patently absurd. Are they now also required to match Muslims? If not, why not? What about Mormons? They say they\u2019re Christian. Is ChristianMingle allowed to have an opinion about&nbsp;that?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A&nbsp;group of our summer Chi Alphans had a conversation&nbsp;about how the books of the Bible got selected. In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
