This is very much worth your&nbsp;time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/news_and_politics\/interrogation\/2016\/07\/rukmini_callimachi_the_new_york_times_isis_reporter_discusses_her_beat.html\">The ISIS Correspondent<\/a> (Isaac Chotiner, Slate): this is timely in light of the terrorist attack in Nice, France. \u201cI think there is an enormous amount of misunderstanding about this question that we get asked over and over again: Does ISIS direct this attack or does ISIS inspire this attack? ISIS-inspired attacks are part of their strategy; are part of their design; are part of what they\u2019re trying to do. And even if he did, it\u2019s fair to wonder whether he should be.\u201d DeYoung\u2019s thoughts parallel many of my own. If you wonder why I am often silent on social media, read&nbsp;this.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2016\/04\/12\/how-highly-religious-americans-lives-are-different-from-others\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Highly Religious Americans\u2019 Lives Are Different From Others<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Michael Lipka, Pew Research): interesting \u2014 both the differences and similarities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@BenSasse\/two-kinds-of-voting-two-kinds-of-disruption-and-two-kinds-of-unrighteousness-fd26895aa01f#.lz90m4e63\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Kinds Of Voting, Two Kinds Of Disruption, and Two Kinds of Righteousness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Senator Ben Sasse, Medium): \u201cTo us, voting is not merely about 1\/130-millionth of deciding who should preside over 1\/3 of the federal government from 2017 to 2021. To us, the act of voting is also a civic duty that tells people what we think America means, what we want to teach our kids about moral leadership, what face we want America to present to the world, and what sort of candidates we want more of in coming years.\u201d I know nothing about Senator Sasse\u2019s voting record \u2014 I just know this is an outstanding essay.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vocativ.com\/335705\/correlation-causation\/\">When Correlation Does Imply Causation<\/a> (Joshua Krisch, Vocativ): \u201cAdditive noise model testing is based on the simple assumption that there is always some statistical noise clinging to the key variables in any experiment\u2014areas where the data becomes fuzzy and unreliable due to measurement errors. Regardless of any link, each variable will have its own unique noise signature, with one caveat: If X causes Y, then the noise in X will be able to contaminate Y, but the noise in Y will not able to do the same to X. Because a cause can affect an effect, but an effect cannot affect a cause (read that last line a few times). \u2026 The key, then, is to follow the noise contamination.\u201d See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jmlr.org\/papers\/volume17\/14-518\/14-518.pdf\">the underlying paper<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>These essays by an English professor at Emory are full of practical advice for those of you considering academia. In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ideological Turing test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
