Check out this Harvard prof\u2019s NY Times op-ed from 1989 arguing <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/10\/16\/opinion\/actually-prohibition-was-a-success.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actually, Prohibition Was a Success<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For the record, I think the new policy is a step in the right direction. I stand by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2016\/06\/10\/things-glen-found-interesting-volume-53\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my earlier comments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and am also amused&nbsp;at how similar the arguments I hear today are to those I heard <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2003\/04\/15\/stanford-limits-freshman-access-to-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back in 2003<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/kayla-mueller-captivity-courage-selflessness-defended-christian-faith\/story?id=41626763\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kayla Mueller in Captivity: Courage, Selflessness as She Defended Christian Faith to ISIS Executioner \u2018Jihadi John\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (James Gordon Meek, Megan Christie, Brian Epstein, Brian Ross, ABC News): a powerful and disturbing story. Doctors Without Borders comes off&nbsp;badly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/2016\/how-usa-today-unraveled-ryan-lochtes-rio-drama\/427190\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How USA Today unraveled Ryan Lochte\u2019s Rio drama<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Kristen Hare, Poynter): An insightful window into journalism and why we should&nbsp;trust news coverage a little less than we think. Lochte still doesn\u2019t come out looking awesome, but neither does he&nbsp;look like the outrageous villain&nbsp;many assumed (and seemed delighted to see him as). Proverbs 18:17 wins&nbsp;again.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2016\/aug\/23\/sex-on-campus-hookup-culture-student-journals?src=longreads&amp;utm_content=buffercd1c5&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex on campus isn\u2019t what you think: what 101 student journals taught me<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Lisa Wade, The Guardian): \u201cHookup culture prevails, even though it serves only a minority of students, because cultures don\u2019t reflect what is, but a specific group\u2019s vision of what should be\u2026. &nbsp;[it] isn\u2019t what the majority of students want, it\u2019s the privileging of the sexual lifestyle most strongly endorsed by those with the most power on campus, the same people we see privileged in every other part of American life.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mereorthodoxy.com\/persistent-dishonesty-progressive-evangelicals-religious-liberty-debates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On David Gushee\u2019s Dishonesty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Jake Meador, Mere Orthodoxy): this is a fascinating essay with surprising insights about the role of grammar in political argumentation. Really.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/christandpopculture.com\/evangelicals-trump-power-persecuted\/?utm_content=buffer726f0&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evangelicals For Trump: In Power or Persecuted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (S.D. Kelly, Christ and Pop Culture): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only do most evangelicals not believe they are the center of power, they consider themselves to be one wedding cake away from jail&nbsp;time.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Given&nbsp;the perpetual Bay Area housing crisis, I found these articles stimulating: <a href=\"http:\/\/marginalrevolution.com\/marginalrevolution\/2016\/08\/laissez-faire-in-tokyo.html\">Laissez-Faire in Tokyo Land Use<\/a> and the follow-up <a href=\"http:\/\/marginalrevolution.com\/marginalrevolution\/2016\/08\/the-japanese-zoning-system.html\">The Japanese Zoning System<\/a> (both by George Mason University econ professor Alex Tabarrok): \u201cJapan\u2019s zoning laws are more rational, more efficient and fairer than those used in the United States.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Things Glen Found Amusing<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocomics.com\/pearlsbeforeswine\/2016\/08\/25\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to reduce the population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Pearls Before Swine) \u2014 sort of a Darwin awards\/nudge hybrid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/maximumble.thebookofbiff.com\/2014\/04\/01\/821-fit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tetris Party<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Maximumble) <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\">the ideological Turing test<\/a> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
