They Also, Unfortunately, Work Really Well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cari Romm, NY Magazine): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there any value to making a roomful of people miserable with false cheer? Psychologist Anton Villado is adamant that the answer is yes, and that icebreakers don\u2019t have to be pleasant to be effective.\u201d Relevant for the start of the school year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/sep\/15\/us-religion-worth-1-trillion-study-economy-apple-google\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Religion in US \u2018worth more than Google and Apple combined\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Harriet Sherwood, The Guardian): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sums spent by religious organisations on social programmes have tripled in the past 15 years, to $9bn. Twenty of the top 50 charities in the US are faith-based, with a combined operating revenue of $45.3bn.\u201d There\u2019s some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cruxnow.com\/commentary\/2016\/09\/14\/study-finds-religion-contributes-1-2-trillion-us-economy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excellent commentary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on this at&nbsp;Crux.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/gleanings\/2016\/september\/first-country-to-officially-defend-christians-persecuted-by.html?visit_source=twitter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The First Country to Officially Defend Christians Persecuted by ISIS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (World Watch Monitor at Christianity Today): It\u2019s Hungary. Hungary\u2019s Minister for Human Resources said, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Christianity has become the most persecuted religion, where out of five people killed [for] religious reasons, four of them are Christians.\u2026&nbsp;In 81 countries around the world, Christians are persecuted, and 200 million Christians live in areas where they are discriminated against.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/14\/opinion\/14pielke.html?_r=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Not a College Degree in Sports?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Roger Pielke Jr., NY Times): \u201cBeyond our cultural biases, what really is the difference between a Shakespeare play, an orchestra concert and a basketball game? Each performance requires some high-level combination of physical ability and mental acuity, developed through years of training and study, and for which only a select few reach elite levels.\u201d There is a similar article back <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2016\/04\/08\/things-glen-found-interesting-volume-44\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in issue 44<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/09\/opinion\/time-for-a-realignment.html?_r=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time For A Realignment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NY Times, David Brooks): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a good chance many of you will be switching political parties over the next 15 years.\u201d This is true both for the reasons Brooks mentions and also because some of you will change your&nbsp;minds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/weird.world\/2015\/03\/27\/the-world-will-only-get-weirder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world will only get weirder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Steven Coast, personal blog): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We fixed all the main reasons aircraft crash a long time ago. Sometimes a long, long time ago. So, we are left with the less and less probable events.\u201d The piece is a few years old so the examples are dated, but it remains&nbsp;very&nbsp;intriguing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\">the ideological Turing test<\/a> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
