I\u2019m not trying to make a&nbsp;case for or against anyone \u2014 I just want some insight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Election: What Happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/11\/9\/13571872\/why-donald-trump-won\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Few predicted Trump had a good shot of winning. But political science models did.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Andrew Prokop, Vox). Social scientists \u2014 believe in your discipline!&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cracked.com\/blog\/6-reasons-trumps-rise-that-no-one-talks-about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Half Of America Lost It\u2019s F**king Mind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (David Wong, Cracked): If you can\u2019t understand how people voted for Trump, read this. Apologies for the language, but I seriously think this piece should be considered for a Pulitzer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/4\/21\/11451378\/smug-american-liberalism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The smug style in American liberalism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Emmitt Rensin, Vox): \u201cIf the smug style can be reduced to a single sentence, it\u2019s, Why are they voting against their own self-interest? But no party these past decades has effectively represented the interests of these dispossessed. Only one has made a point of openly disdaining them too.\u201d This is an older piece which turned out to have strong predictive value. Shared by a student. There is one factual error I feel obliged to point out: Kim Davis won. She got what she wanted. It\u2019s revealing that even someone sympathetic like Rensin doesn\u2019t seem to realize that.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alastairadversaria.com\/2016\/11\/10\/further-thoughts-how-social-justice-ideology-fuels-racism-and-sexism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further Thoughts: How Social Justice Ideology Fuels Racism and Sexism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Alastair Roberts, blog): \u201cthe overreach of progressive liberals, who are chronically out of touch with social and natural reality, has played a prominent part in provoking the rise of a movement that is resistant to shame and guilt, as these had formerly been weaponized to control them.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.currentaffairs.org\/2016\/11\/what-this-means-how-this-happened-what-to-do-now\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What This Means, How This Happened, What To Do Now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Nathan Robinson, Current Affairs): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progressives <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to understand how people who are different from them think. No more writing them off as racist and deplorable. Even if they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, what good does that do? You need to understand racists not so you can sympathize with them, but so you can figure out what shapes people\u2019s beliefs, and help them reach different beliefs.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/the-age-of-acceptable-lies\">The Age Of Acceptable Lies<\/a> (Mike Cosper, Gospel Coalition): \u201cIn other words, we don\u2019t want Trump to be a misogynist, since it undermines our ability to vote for him. So his words find new interpretations. Or we don\u2019t want Hillary to have a record of disregard for both the rule of law and policies that protect national security. So we don\u2019t believe her email scandal means anything. Or we don\u2019t want the Bible to say hard things about sexuality. So we don\u2019t believe it does.\u201d This article is&nbsp;about something&nbsp;broader than but germane to the election. Read this one even if you skip most articles in this section.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Thoughts From People&nbsp;Who Voted For&nbsp;Trump<\/strong><br>\nI have overheard several people&nbsp;asking how anyone could have voted for Trump. Here\u2019s why.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Joel Rosenberg, personal blog)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cassandrahewlett.wordpress.com\/2016\/11\/09\/i-am\/\">I Am<\/a>&nbsp; (Cassie Hewlett, personal blog). The title is not a religious reference. A student shared this one with&nbsp;me.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Implications \/ Consequences Of The Election<br>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3065512\/economists-predict-impact-of-trump\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Trump Might Mean For The Economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Christos Makridis, Fast Company): yes, that\u2019s our Christos. Proud of the way you put your scholarship out there for the public, man. Keep it&nbsp;up!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/article\/two-concerns-for-the-religious-right-under-president-trump\">Two Concerns for the Religious Right Under President Trump<\/a> (Colin Hansen, Gospel Coalition): \u201cFirst, many evangelical leaders had lost touch with the rest of the movement. And second, the rest of the movement had lost touch with the concerns with their minority brothers and sisters.\u201d If you only read one thing in this section, read&nbsp;this.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.thegospelcoalition.org\/thabitianyabwile\/2016\/11\/09\/4-problems-associated-with-white-evangelical-support-of-donald-trump\/\">4 Problems Associated With White Evangelical Support Of Donald Trump<\/a> (Thabiti Anyabwile, Gospel Coalition): one significant caveat about both this and the previous article \u2014 I expect that the 80% statistic will dwindle under more careful investigation. Consistently in the polls before the election there was a marked difference between people who self-identified as evangelical and those who actually attended evangelical churches. The 80% number is about the former. I mentioned this&nbsp;to a Chinese citizen and she said she\u2019d only heard about it from Americans and was skeptical it would happen as described.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearreligion.org\/articles\/2016\/11\/08\/vatican_blinded_to_reality_in_venezuela_107139.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vatican Blinded to Reality in Venezuela<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Francis Rooney, Real Clear Religion): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the crisis spirals out of control, Venezuela is in danger of becoming this hemisphere\u2019s Syria.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\">the ideological Turing test<\/a> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
