I find a stim\u00adu\u00adlat\u00ading obser\u00adva\u00adtion on near\u00adly every page. Last week I acci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly skipped one of the read\u00adings (chap\u00adter four), so today here are some thoughts on both chap\u00adter four and chap\u00adter five.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cImag\u00adine, in this regard, a gen\u00aduine \u2018third great awak\u00aden\u00ading\u2019 occur\u00adring in Amer\u00adi\u00adca, where half of the pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion is con\u00advert\u00aded to a deep Chris\u00adt\u00adian faith. Unless this awak\u00aden\u00ading extend\u00aded to envel\u00adop the cul\u00adtur\u00adal gate\u00adkeep\u00aders, it would have lit\u00adtle effect on the char\u00adac\u00adter of the sym\u00adbols that are pro\u00adduced and pre\u00advail in pub\u00adlic and pri\u00advate cul\u00adture. And, with\u00adout a fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal restruc\u00adtur\u00ading of the insti\u00adtu\u00adtions of cul\u00adture for\u00adma\u00adtion and trans\u00admis\u00adsion in our society\u2014the mar\u00adket, gov\u00adern\u00adment-spon\u00adsored cul\u00adtur\u00adal insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, edu\u00adca\u00adtion at all lev\u00adels, adver\u00adtis\u00ading, enter\u00adtain\u00adment, pub\u00adlish\u00ading, and the news media, not to men\u00adtion church \u2014 revival would have a neg\u00adli\u00adgi\u00adble long-term effect on the recon\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adtion of the cul\u00adture.\u201d page 46<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As it turns out, there actu\u00adal\u00adly was such great awak\u00aden\u00ading that goes large\u00adly unrec\u00adog\u00adnized by his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adans. It was the Jesus peo\u00adple move\u00adment of the 60s and it played out exact\u00adly as Hunter describes. You can&nbsp;<span class=\"il\">read<\/span>&nbsp;more about it in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/searchworks.stanford.edu\/view\/10207319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/searchworks.stanford.edu\/view\/10207319&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499786615857000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHpRHKlKx8H64Tnh72mnC1-dkw58g\">God\u2019s For\u00adev\u00ader Fam\u00adi\u00adly by Lar\u00adry Eskridge<\/a>.&nbsp;The fact that most of you don\u2019t know about it (and even Hunter appears not to, or at least not to appre\u00adci\u00adate how much it serves his pur\u00adpose) illus\u00adtrates Hunter\u2019s the\u00adsis, much as the tem\u00adper\u00adance move\u00adment does.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cSuch is the sto\u00adry of one of the most pow\u00ader\u00adful transat\u00adlantic social reform move\u00adments of the nine\u00adteenth and ear\u00adly twen\u00adti\u00adeth centuries\u2014the tem\u00adper\u00adance move\u00adment. This move\u00adment failed, of course, not least because it did not and could not address the cul\u00adture of restraint on which the par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar inter\u00adest of tem\u00adper\u00adance depend\u00aded. In the end, the ide\u00adal of \u2018tem\u00adper\u00adance\u2019 final\u00adly expired in deri\u00adsion with the repeal of the Vol\u00adstead Act in 1933, the word now hav\u00ading dis\u00adap\u00adpeared from our pub\u00adlic vocab\u00adu\u00adlary.\u201d page 46<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That last sen\u00adtence is stun\u00adning \u2014&nbsp;<b>a word that iden\u00adti\u00adfies the high\u00adly suc\u00adcess\u00adful move\u00adment of the last cen\u00adtu\u00adry has now dis\u00adap\u00adpeared from our day to day vocab\u00adu\u00adlary<\/b>. More\u00adover, Pro\u00adhi\u00adbi\u00adtion (a crown\u00ading suc\u00adcess of the tem\u00adper\u00adance move\u00adment) has become syn\u00adony\u00admous with failed social pol\u00adi\u00adcy even though Pro\u00adhi\u00adbi\u00adtion actu\u00adal\u00adly achieved sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant good: check out this Har\u00advard prof\u2019s NY Times op-ed from 1989 argu\u00ading&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/10\/16\/opinion\/actually-prohibition-was-a-success.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/10\/16\/opinion\/actually-prohibition-was-a-success.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1499786615857000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHoYfV-cjlN5AkwvZs1sZk20dnUIg\">Actu\u00adal\u00adly, Pro\u00adhi\u00adbi\u00adtion Was a Suc\u00adcess<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Con\u00adtrast that with the Protes\u00adtant Ref\u00ador\u00adma\u00adtion.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cThe suc\u00adcess of the Ref\u00ador\u00adma\u00adtion, as Protes\u00adtants like to tell it, was a result of the tri\u00adumph of truth over false\u00adhood, true Chris\u00adt\u00adian moral\u00adi\u00adty over cor\u00adrup\u00adtion in the medieval church, gen\u00aduine piety over false piety, and so on. To be sure, there was sham god\u00adli\u00adness, spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal and moral cor\u00adrup\u00adtion, and the\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal (p.65) fab\u00adri\u00adca\u00adtion for which the Ref\u00ador\u00adma\u00adtion stood as a cor\u00adrec\u00adtive. But there were oth\u00ader reform move\u00adments of the late medieval peri\u00adod that con\u00adtend\u00aded for the same things as Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, and Hus and yet either failed or were ren\u00addered impo\u00adtent. What made the Ref\u00ador\u00adma\u00adtion of the six\u00adteenth cen\u00adtu\u00adry suc\u00adcess\u00adful, though, were fac\u00adtors that were not exact\u00adly the\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal or spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal in nature.\u201d pages 64\u201365<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cAt its heart, of course, the Ref\u00ador\u00adma\u00adtion was an intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal and moral rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion, orig\u00adi\u00adnat\u00ading with\u00adin the the\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal fac\u00adul\u00adty of a Ger\u00adman uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty, which chal\u00adlenged and offered a bib\u00adlio\u00adcen\u00adtric alter\u00adna\u00adtive to late medieval the\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy and reli\u00adgious prac\u00adtice. Foun\u00adda\u00adtion\u00adal to this rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion was the fact that the lead\u00ading reform\u00aders were all schol\u00adars of the first order. In addi\u00adtion to the Bible, they had mas\u00adtery over the ideas, log\u00adic, lan\u00adguage, and texts of clas\u00adsi\u00adcal thought and medieval scholas\u00adti\u00adcism.\u201d page 66<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is anoth\u00ader use\u00adful illus\u00adtra\u00adtion of the Chris\u00adtian\u00adiza\u00adtion of pagan Europe:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cIn sum, the con\u00adver\u00adsion of bar\u00adbar\u00adian Europe took cen\u00adturies. The move\u00adment of change was from the high\u00ader ech\u00ade\u00adlons of the social order to the low\u00ader; indeed it took mul\u00adti\u00adple gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtions after roy\u00adal con\u00adver\u00adsion for Chris\u00adtian\u00adiza\u00adtion in the cul\u00adture and among the com\u00admon peo\u00adple to occur. Look\u00ading back, it is easy to be ambiva\u00adlent about all that occurred. One can find Chris\u00adt\u00adian faith that is at its most exemplary\u2014enacted love that is hum\u00adble, coura\u00adgeous, sac\u00adri\u00adfi\u00adcial, gen\u00ader\u00adous, and so on. One can also find Chris\u00adtian\u00adi\u00adty syn\u00adcretized with pagan\u00adism and rife with corruption\u2014forced con\u00adver\u00adsions, bribery, greed, cal\u00adcu\u00adlat\u00ading, pow\u00ader-hun\u00adgry, and exploita\u00adtive. There is much here to learn from and emu\u00adlate and every bit as much to detest.\u201d pages 60\u201361<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Inci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly, foot\u00adnotes 101\u2013106 are quite inter\u00adest\u00ading and give fur\u00adther his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal illus\u00adtra\u00adtions. I guess they were in the ini\u00adtial text and an edi\u00adtor made him trim the chap\u00adter down.<\/p>\n<p>These his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal sum\u00admaries are meant to illus\u00adtrate Hunter\u2019s eleven the\u00adses about cul\u00adture and cul\u00adtur\u00adal change. I\u2019ve sum\u00adma\u00adrized them below in case you did\u00adn\u2019t have a chance to&nbsp;read&nbsp;chap\u00adter 4.<\/p>\n<p><b>One: Cul\u00adture is a sys\u00adtem of truth claims and moral oblig\u00ada\u00adtions<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cThat is, our under\u00adstand\u00ading of the world is so tak\u00aden-for-grant\u00aded that it seems utter\u00adly obvi\u00adous. It bears repeat\u00ading that it is not just our view of what is right or wrong or true or false but our under\u00adstand\u00ading of time, space, and identity\u2014the very essence of real\u00adi\u00adty as we expe\u00adri\u00adence it.\u2026 Most of what real\u00adly counts, in terms of what shapes us and directs us, we are not aware of; it oper\u00adates far below what most of us are capa\u00adble of con\u00adscious\u00adly grasp\u00ading.\u201d (page 33)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><b>Two: Cul\u00adture is a prod\u00aduct of his\u00adto\u00adry<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cCul\u00adture takes form as the slow accre\u00adtions of mean\u00ading in soci\u00adety over long peri\u00adods of time.\u2026 The iner\u00adtia built into cul\u00adture by virtue of its rela\u00adtion\u00adship to its long his\u00adto\u00adry tends to make it lum\u00adber\u00ading and errat\u00adic at the same time. (pages 33\u201334)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Three: Cul\u00adture is instrin\u00adcal\u00adly dialec\u00adti\u00adcal<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cTo put it blunt\u00adly, cul\u00adture is as much an infra\u00adstruc\u00adture as it is ideas. It takes shape in con\u00adcrete insti\u00adtu\u00adtion\u00adal form.\u2026 Anoth\u00ader way to say this is that cul\u00adture is intrin\u00adsi\u00adcal\u00adly dialec\u00adti\u00adcal. It is gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded and exists at the inter\u00adface between ideas and insti\u00adtu\u00adtions; between the sym\u00adbol\u00adic and the social and phys\u00adi\u00adcal envi\u00adron\u00adment.\u201d (page 34)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cInsti\u00adtu\u00adtions can\u00adnot exist with\u00adout the indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals who make them work, but indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals can\u00adnot be under\u00adstood out\u00adside of the insti\u00adtu\u00adtions that form them and frame all of their activ\u00adi\u00adty. That said, in the for\u00adma\u00adtion of cul\u00adture, one should not be under the illu\u00adsion that the dialec\u00adtic is even\u00adly bal\u00adanced. While indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals are not pow\u00ader\u00adless by any stretch of the imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion, insti\u00adtu\u00adtions have much greater pow\u00ader.\u201d (page 35)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Four: Cul\u00adture is a resource and, as such, a form of pow\u00ader<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201c\u2026sym\u00adbols in the form of knowl\u00adedge, tech\u00adni\u00adcal know-how, cre\u00adden\u00adtials, and cul\u00adtur\u00adal accom\u00adplish\u00adments can also be thought of as a form of cap\u00adi\u00adtal. Par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly in the cul\u00adtur\u00adal mean\u00ading imput\u00aded to such things, cul\u00adture can be under\u00adstood as sym\u00adbol\u00adic cap\u00adi\u00adtal. Though, unlike mon\u00adey, sym\u00adbol\u00adic cap\u00adi\u00adtal can\u00adnot read\u00adi\u00adly be trans\u00adferred from one gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion to anoth\u00ader, or from one indi\u00advid\u00adual to anoth\u00ader, like mon\u00adey, sym\u00adbol\u00adic cap\u00adi\u00adtal can be accu\u00admu\u00adlat\u00aded. Some indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adals, some orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions, and some objects have more and accu\u00admu\u00adlate more sym\u00adbol\u00adic cap\u00adi\u00adtal than oth\u00aders.\u201d page 35<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201c\u2026accu\u00admu\u00adlat\u00aded sym\u00adbol\u00adic cap\u00adi\u00adtal trans\u00adlates into a kind of pow\u00ader and influ\u00adence. But influ\u00adence of what kind? It starts as cred\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty, an author\u00adi\u00adty one pos\u00adsess\u00ades which puts one in a posi\u00adtion to be lis\u00adtened to and tak\u00aden seri\u00adous\u00adly. It ends as the pow\u00ader to define real\u00adi\u00adty itself.\u201d page 36<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Five: Cul\u00adtur\u00adal pro\u00adduc\u00adtion and sym\u00adbol\u00adic cap\u00adi\u00adtal are strat\u00adi\u00adfied in a fair\u00adly rigid struc\u00adture of \u201ccen\u00adter\u201d and \u201cperiph\u00adery\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201c\u2026one may be able to get as good an edu\u00adca\u00adtion at Blue\u00adfield State Col\u00adlege in Blue\u00adfield, West Vir\u00adginia, as one would at Har\u00advard, but Har\u00advard, as an insti\u00adtu\u00adtion, is at the cen\u00adter and Blue\u00adfield State is at the periph\u00adery of cul\u00adtur\u00adal pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. There\u00adfore, some\u00adone with a cre\u00adden\u00adtial from Har\u00advard will find many more oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties than some\u00adone from Blue\u00adfield State and will more like\u00adly end up in a posi\u00adtion of greater influ\u00adence than the oth\u00ader.\u201d page 37<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Six: Cul\u00adture is gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded with\u00adin net\u00adworks<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201c\u2026the key actor in his\u00adto\u00adry is not indi\u00advid\u00adual genius but rather the net\u00adwork and the new insti\u00adtu\u00adtions that are cre\u00adat\u00aded out of those net\u00adworks. And the more \u201cdense\u201d the network\u2014that is, the more active and inter\u00adac\u00adtive the network\u2014the more influ\u00aden\u00adtial it could be. This is where the stuff of cul\u00adture and cul\u00adtur\u00adal change is pro\u00adduced. In mak\u00ading this case, I don\u2019t want to under\u00adplay the role of indi\u00advid\u00adual charis\u00adma and genius. With\u00adin any net\u00adwork, there is usu\u00adal\u00adly one who pro\u00advides a cer\u00adtain unprece\u00addent\u00aded lead\u00ader\u00adship, who offers a greater degree of artic\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion or who puts more at risk finan\u00adcial\u00adly, social\u00adly, and rep\u00adu\u00adta\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly, or who pro\u00advides the con\u00adnec\u00adtive tis\u00adsue for the net\u00adwork itself. This is where we do find the great\u00adness of a Mar\u00adtin Luther or John Calvin, a William Wilber\u00adforce, a Dorothy Day, a Mar\u00adtin Luther King, and so on.\u201d page 38<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Sev\u00aden: Cul\u00adture is nei\u00adther autonomous nor ful\u00adly coher\u00adent<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cIn some ways, the expan\u00adsion of the state in the last sev\u00ader\u00adal decades is due to its grow\u00ading role in the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of knowl\u00adedge and infor\u00adma\u00adtion. Sci\u00adence and edu\u00adca\u00adtion are, in the main, appendages of the state, as are the myr\u00adi\u00adad reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adto\u00adry agen\u00adcies deal\u00ading with health, occu\u00adpa\u00adtion\u00adal safe\u00adty, wel\u00adfare, and com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtions among oth\u00aders. So too, of course, is the judi\u00adcia\u00adry. This means not only that the state pro\u00advides much of the finan\u00adcial, per\u00adson\u00adnel, and admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtive infra\u00adstruc\u00adture for the knowl\u00adedge indus\u00adtry but also that the state can lim\u00adit dis\u00adsent through its coer\u00adcive pow\u00aders. It is in the realm of edu\u00adca\u00adtion where these pow\u00aders are most crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly at work.\u201d page 40<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Eight: Cul\u00adtures change from the top down, rarely if ever from the bot\u00adtom up<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cEven where the impe\u00adtus for change draws from pop\u00adu\u00adlar agi\u00adta\u00adtion, it does not gain trac\u00adtion until it is embraced and prop\u00ada\u00adgat\u00aded by elites.\u201d page 41<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cIn a very crude for\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtion, the process begins with the\u00ado\u00adrists who gen\u00ader\u00adate ideas and knowl\u00adedge; moves to researchers who explore, revise, expand, and val\u00adi\u00addate ideas; moves on to teach\u00aders and edu\u00adca\u00adtors who pass those ideas on to oth\u00aders, then pass\u00ades on to pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adiz\u00aders who sim\u00adpli\u00adfy ideas and prac\u00adti\u00adtion\u00aders who apply those ideas. All of this, of course, tran\u00adspires through net\u00adworks and struc\u00adtures of cul\u00adtur\u00adal pro\u00adduc\u00adtion.\u201d page 42<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Nine: Change is typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly ini\u00adti\u00adat\u00aded by elites who are out\u00adside of the cen\u00adter\u00admost posi\u00adtions of pres\u00adtige<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cWher\u00adev\u00ader inno\u00adva\u00adtion begins, it comes as a chal\u00adlenge to the dom\u00adi\u00adnant ideas and moral sys\u00adtems defined by the elites who pos\u00adsess the high\u00adest lev\u00adels of sym\u00adbol\u00adic cap\u00adi\u00adtal. Inno\u00adva\u00adtion, in oth\u00ader words, gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly moves from elites and the insti\u00adtu\u00adtions they lead to the gen\u00ader\u00adal pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion but among elites who do not nec\u00ades\u00adsar\u00adi\u00adly occu\u00adpy the high\u00adest ech\u00ade\u00adlons of pres\u00adtige.\u201d page 42<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Ten: World-chang\u00ading is most con\u00adcen\u00adtrat\u00aded when the net\u00adworks of elites and the insti\u00adtu\u00adtions they lead over\u00adlap<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cThe impe\u00adtus, ener\u00adgy, and direc\u00adtion for world-mak\u00ading and world-chang\u00ading are great\u00adest where var\u00adi\u00adous forms of cul\u00adtur\u00adal, social, eco\u00adnom\u00adic, and often polit\u00adi\u00adcal resources over\u00adlap. In short, when net\u00adworks of elites in over\u00adlap\u00adping fields of cul\u00adture and over\u00adlap\u00adping spheres of social life come togeth\u00ader with their var\u00adied resources and act in com\u00admon pur\u00adpose, cul\u00adtures do change and change pro\u00adfound\u00adly. Per\u00adsis\u00adtence over time is essen\u00adtial; lit\u00adtle of sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance hap\u00adpens in three to five years.\u201d page 43<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Eleven: Cul\u00adtures change, but rarely if ever with\u00adout a fight<\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\u201cBy its very nature, cul\u00adture is a realm in which insti\u00adtu\u00adtions and their agents seek to defend one under\u00adstand\u00ading of the world against alter\u00adna\u00adtives, which are always either present or latent.
