The Internet and social media have trained my brain to read a paragraph or two, and then start looking around.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2014\/08\/06\/ask-andrew-w-k-my-dad-is-a-right-wing-asshole\/\">Ask Andrew W.K.: My Dad Is a Right-Wing Asshole<\/a> (Andrew W.K., The Village Voice): apologies for the title, this is a surprisingly good piece (published back in&nbsp;2014).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/22\/opinion\/sunday\/charlie-gard-and-the-experts.html\">Charlie Gard and the Experts<\/a> (Ross Douthat, New York Times): \u201cThe rights of parents are essential to a free society\u2019s architecture, and fathers and mothers are far more likely than any other party to have their child\u2019s best interests close to heart. To intervene on behalf of experts against the family is sometimes necessary but always dangerous, fraught with totalitarian temptations to which the modern West is not immune.\u201d Charlie Gard died after this column was written, which makes the piece even more important.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/25\/opinion\/how-cool-works-in-america-today.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Cool Works In America Today<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (David Brooks, New York Times): argues that being woke is a cultural replacement for being cool. \u201cThe woke mentality became prominent in 2012 and 2013 with the Trayvon Martin case and the rise of Black Lives Matter. Embrace it or not, B.L.M. is the most complete social movement in America today, as a communal, intellectual, moral and political force.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2017\/07\/free-markets-and-unicorns\">Free Markets and Unicorns<\/a> (Andrew Strain, First Things): \u201cIn the age of corporations, a truly free market is as mythical as a unicorn.\u201d This essay called forth the response piece&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.acton.org\/archives\/96963-why-is-socialism-being-promoted-by-conservative-christian-outlets.html\">Why is socialism being promoted by conservative Christian outlets?<\/a> (Joe Carter, Acton Institute): \u201cby analyzing his essay we can see a common pattern that is emerging, even in once conservative publications: writers who don\u2019t know the first thing about free markets explaining why they are inferior to socialist policies.\u201d Reading them together is illuminating.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Things Glen Found Amusing\/Entertaining<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"simple-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/1867\/\">Physics Confession<\/a> (xkcd)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=thIlxChNYqk\">Shin Lim\u2019s Return to Penn &amp; Teller<\/a> (youtube) \u2014 his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EAN-PwRfJcA\">first appearance<\/a> on the show has more than forty million views.<\/li>\n<li>I stumbled upon a list of funny Christian images this week. If it looks familiar it\u2019s because I allude to it from time to time in my sermons and conversations. (first shared in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2015\/08\/28\/things-glen-found-interesting-volume-14\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">volume 14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\">the ideological Turing test<\/a> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
