My church<\/a> went to see The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe<\/a> this Sat\u00adur\u00adday and we brought guests\u20133 to 4 times as many out\u00adside our church went to see it with us as did church mem\u00adbers.<\/p>\n

It was mag\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcent. From a fan\u2019s per\u00adspec\u00adtive, it was as faith\u00adful to the book as you can expect a movie to be. From a tech\u00adni\u00adcal per\u00adspec\u00adtive, it should say some\u00adthing that I found a beaver in chain mail utter\u00adly con\u00advinc\u00ading. <\/p>\n

They even made Turk\u00adish Delight look appeal\u00ading, which is tru\u00adly nasty can\u00addy. If that was the most tempt\u00ading snack avail\u00adable to Brits dur\u00ading the war I\u2019m amazed they were able to hold out against the Luft\u00adwaffe. I mean, real\u00adly. Turk\u00adish Delight? The stuff tastes like con\u00adgealed fat.<\/p>\n

I was des\u00adtined to love the movie as long as it was even close to the book. I was more inter\u00adest\u00aded in the reac\u00adtions of my neigh\u00adbors: he an athe\u00adis\u00adtic Jew\u00adish post\u00addoc\u00adtor\u00adal biol\u00ado\u00adgy researcher at Stan\u00adford and she a not-real\u00adly-prac\u00adtic\u00ading Hin\u00addu who works as a busi\u00adness con\u00adsul\u00adtant.<\/p>\n

They loved it, too.<\/p>\n

As we were talk\u00ading about it after\u00adwards, he com\u00adment\u00aded \u201cThe reviews I\u2019ve read are right\u2013it\u2019s def\u00adi\u00adnite\u00adly got Chris\u00adt\u00adian imagery but you have to look for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

While I think he down\u00adplayed the obvi\u00adous\u00adness of the Chris\u00adt\u00adian mes\u00adsage (it\u2019s always win\u00adter with\u00adout CHRISTmas\u2013hello?), I think he was on to some\u00adthing. <\/p>\n

The movie did dilute some key dia\u00adlog, but even if the dia\u00adlog had been unal\u00adtered his point would still have mer\u00adit. The sto\u00adry does\u00adn\u2019t so much tell the Chris\u00adt\u00adian mes\u00adsage as it pre\u00adpares one for it. It cre\u00adates cat\u00ade\u00adgories and under\u00adstand\u00adings in your mind which serve as place\u00adhold\u00aders for the gospel. It\u2019s like an extend\u00aded para\u00adble that high\u00adlights a few truths:<\/p>\n
