In Nigeria, the line between church and city is rapidly vanishing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commentarymagazine.com\/articles\/open-letter-ta-nehisi-coates\/\"><span>An Open Letter to Ta-Nehisi Coates<\/span><\/a><span> (Jason D. Hill, Commentary Magazine): a gay black man strongly believes in the American dream and takes issue with Coates\u2019 disparagement of it. \u201cI expected no special treatment because, as an American, I was already part of an exceptional process. My ideas, I had decided on the flight over, would one day be taught in colleges and universities. I will tell you presently the extent to which that <\/span><i><span>willed decision <\/span><\/i><span>became reality, and why it was possible only in the United States of America.\u201d (incidentally, I featured an essay by Coates back in <a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2016\/12\/16\/things-glen-found-interesting-volume-80\">issue 80<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2017\/09\/the-question-of-race-in-campus-sexual-assault-cases\/539361\/\"><span>The Question of Race in Campus Sexual-Assault Cases<\/span><\/a><span> (Emily Yoffe, The Atlantic): \u201cKagle believes that men of color\u2014and especially foreign men of color, students from Africa and Asia\u2014were uniquely defenseless when charged with sexual assault, typically lacking financial resources, a network of support, and an understanding of their rights.\u201d I linked Yoffe\u2019s two previous articles in <a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2017\/09\/08\/things-glen-found-interesting-volume-117\">last week\u2019s edition<\/a>. They should be read in conjunction with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/13\/opinion\/campus-rape-devos-title-ix.html\">Campus Rape, A Survivor\u2019s Story<\/a> (Bret Stephens, NY&nbsp;Times).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2017\/09\/12\/serve-gay-clients-time-wont-cater-sex-wedding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They Serve Gay Clients All The Time. So Why Won\u2019t They Cater A Same-Sex Wedding?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Josh Shepherd, The Federalist): \u201cPhillips choked up with emotion as he continued: \u2018You can\u2019t serve God and money. I didn\u2019t open this so I could make a lot of money. I opened it up so it would be a way that I could create my art, do the baking that I love and serve the God that I love in ways that would hopefully honor Him.\u2019\u201d See also&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/news\/2017\/september\/justice-dept-masterpiece-cakeshop-supreme-court-gay-wedding.html\">Icing on the Cake: Justice Dept. Backs Christian Baker Bound for Supreme Court<\/a> (Kate Shellnut, Christianity Today). The latter is tremendous news, and presumably due to the influence of Mike&nbsp;Pence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/news\/2017\/september\/how-many-churches-in-america-us-nones-nondenominational.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Many Churches Does America Have? More Than Expected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rebecca Randall, Christianity Today): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a recent paper published by sociologist Simon Brauer in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number of religious congregations in the United States has increased by almost 50,000 since 1998.\u201d You can see the original research <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jssr.12330\/epdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the researcher is a sociologist at Duke University. Interesting news. It\u2019s almost like the gates of hell cannot prevail against the church.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2017\/09\/10\/hurricane-irma-faith-groups-provide-bulk-disaster-recovery-coordination-fema\/651007001\/\"><span>Faith groups provide the bulk of disaster recovery, in coordination with FEMA<\/span><\/a><span> (Paul Singer, USA Today): &nbsp;\u201c&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u2018About 80% of all recovery happens because of non-profits, and the majority of them are faith-based,\u2019 said Greg Forrester, CEO of the national VOAD. The money is \u2018all raised by the individuals who go and serve, raised through corporate connections, raised through church connections,\u2019 and amounts to billions of dollars worth of disaster recovery assistance, he&nbsp;said.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(17)30580-8\">The Human Fetus Preferentially Engages with Face-like Visual Stimuli<\/a> (Current Biology, Reid et al): apparently about a month and a half before birth babies can perceive faces through the uterine wall. I found this research both amazing and depressing. I wonder how many babies were excited to be making a new friend up until they were aborted.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/2017\/chelsea-manning-harvard-fellow\">Harvard Calls Chelsea Manning Invite A \u2018Mistake,\u2019 Rescinds Fellowship Offer \u2014 Here\u2019s What\u2019s Going On<\/a> (Benjamin Goggin, Digg). Meanwhile, students are taking their studies less and less seriously as they realize that they need only go through the motions to graduate and get on the job market, which is their ultimate goal. I also know you spend more time on non-academic activities than you think. #justsayin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Things Glen Found Interesting A While&nbsp;Ago<\/h3>\n<p>Every week I\u2019ll highlight an older link still worth your consideration. This week we have&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.asa3.org\/ASA\/PSCF\/2003\/PSCF12-03Hill.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making Sense of the Numbers of Genesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [pdf link] (Carol Hill, Perspectives on Science and the Christian Faith): \u201cJoseph and Joshua were each recorded as dying at age 110\u2014a number considered \u2018perfect\u2019 by the Egyptians. In ancient Egyptian doctrine, the phrase \u2018he died aged 110\u2019 was actually an epitaph commemorating a life that had been lived selflessly and had resulted in outstanding social and moral benefit for others. And so for both Joseph and Joshua, who came out of the Egyptian culture, quoting this age was actually a tribute to their character. But, to be described as \u2018dying at age 110\u2019 bore no necessary relationship to the actual time of an individual\u2019s life span.\u201d You will not agree with everything in this article, but it is full of fascinating insights. In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
