If you read something fascinating please pass it my&nbsp;way.<\/p>\n<h3>Things Glen Found Interesting<\/h3>\n<ol class=\"simple-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/26\/us\/politics\/migrant-children-missing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Agencies Lost Track of Nearly 1,500 Migrant Children Placed With Sponsors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ron Nixon, New York Times): \u201c\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the agency had lost track of nearly 1,500 migrant children it placed with sponsors in the United States, raising concerns they could end up in the hands of human traffickers or be used as laborers by people posing as relatives.\u201d This is an article from April about kids who arrive alone at the border, but I can\u2019t help but think of it when I hear stories about new policies separating kids from their families at the border. If I am reading this correctly, they lost track of 20% of the minors they placed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outrageously unacceptable.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/albertmohler.com\/2018\/05\/23\/wrath-god-poured-humiliation-southern-baptist-convention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wrath of God Poured Out \u2014 The Humiliation of the Southern Baptist Convention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Albert Mohler, personal blog): this is pure fire. I pray leaders in the Assemblies of God will act with similar courage should it become necessary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/reviews\/christian-indentity-snodgrass-rosner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Our Identity Searches Really Reveal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Eric Parker, Gospel Coalition): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most significant question in understanding personal identity is not \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> am I?\u2019 but \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> am I?\u2019\u2026 This one turn of phrase might be the most significant turn of thought we could ever make. But since many of us haven\u2019t made that turn of thought, we inhabit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constructed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identities rather than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identities.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/china-social-credit-system-blocked-people-taking-flights-train-trips-2018-5?IR=T\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s social credit system has blocked people from taking 11 million flights and 4 million train trips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Tara Francis Chan, Business Insider): \u201ca former official, Hou Yunchun, is quoted as saying the system needs to be improved so \u2018discredited people become bankrupt.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/21\/opinion\/foster-child-conservative.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Being a Foster Child Made Me a Conservative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rob Henderson, New York Times): \u201cIndividuals have rights. But they also have responsibilities. For instance, when I say parents should prioritize their children over their careers, there is a sense of unease among my peers. They think I want to blame individuals rather than a nebulous foe like poverty. They are mostly right.\u201d The author just graduated from Yale. Worth reading regardless of your political allegiances.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-05-marriage-game-kind-guy-wife.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriage name game: What kind of guy would take his wife\u2019s last name?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Phys.org): \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[The study] found that among men with less than a high school degree, 10.3 percent reported changing their surname. Among men with a high school degree but no college, it was 3.6 percent, and among men with any college, only 2 percent. None of the men surveyed who had an advanced degree changed their&nbsp;name.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/quillette.com\/2018\/05\/14\/the-racism-treadmill\/\">The Racism Treadmill<\/a> (Coleman Hughes, Quillette): \u201cIn an economy increasingly based on cognitive labor, it\u2019s hard to imagine a cultural feature more harmful than a socially-enforced taboo on academic striving. This week we have&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a provocative read, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/In-Defense-of-Flogging\/127208\/?sid=at\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Defense of Flogging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Peter Moskos, Chronicle of Higher Education) \u2014 the author is a former police officer and now a criminologist at the City University of New York. This one was shared back before I started sending these emails in a blog post called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2011\/05\/05\/punishment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punishment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. To paraphrase another minister: we are not about the donkey\u2019s agenda and we are not about the elephant\u2019s agenda \u2014 we are about the Lamb\u2019s agenda. Having said that, I read widely (in part because I believe we should aspire to pass <a href=\"http:\/\/econlog.econlib.org\/archives\/2011\/06\/the_ideological.html\">the ideological Turing test<\/a> and in part because I do not believe I can fairly say \u201cI agree\u201d or \u201cI disagree\u201d until I can say \u201cI understand\u201d) and may at times share articles that have a strong partisan bias simply because I find the article stimulating. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).<\/p>\n<p>Also, remember that I\u2019m not reporting news \u2014 I\u2019m giving you a selection of things I found interesting.
