Today I received from the Stan\u00adford Office for Reli\u00adgious Life<\/a> the names of all three of the Assem\u00adblies of God<\/a> stu\u00addents plan\u00adning to attend Stan\u00adford next year. That\u2019s right\u2013three. Out of around 1,400. There was also a Foursquare<\/a> stu\u00addent and a few from inde\u00adpen\u00addent charis\u00admat\u00adic church\u00ades. Let\u2019s say there are about 10\u201315 Pentecostal\/charismatic stu\u00addents in total.<\/p>\n

Even giv\u00aden that only 4% of teens attend a Pen\u00adte\u00adcostal or Charis\u00admat\u00adic<\/a> church, that\u2019s pret\u00adty sad. If even 4% com\u00ading to Stan\u00adford were Pentecostal\/charismatic that would be over 50 incom\u00ading fresh\u00admen. That\u2019s a dis\u00adcrep\u00adan\u00adcy of 70% (in oth\u00ader words, 70% few\u00ader stu\u00addents are Pen\u00adte\u00adcostal or Charis\u00admat\u00adic than you would expect)!<\/p>\n

That does\u00adn\u2019t both\u00ader me for the rea\u00adson you might think. Chi Alpha @ Stan\u00adford<\/a> is pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly an evan\u00adge\u00adlis\u00adtic orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion. While we do want to take care of incom\u00ading Chris\u00adt\u00adian stu\u00addents and help them mature in their faith, we\u2019re pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly con\u00adcerned with reach\u00ading the major\u00adi\u00adty who have no reli\u00adgious back\u00adground at all (much less a Chris\u00adt\u00adian one).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not so much that I wish there were more stu\u00addents to plug into our group as I won\u00adder why more com\u00ading in aren\u2019t believ\u00aders. These num\u00adbers, while only direct\u00adly reflect\u00ading on Pen\u00adte\u00adcostals are rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive of what the oth\u00ader min\u00adistries are receiv\u00ading. <\/p>\n

There\u2019s been a mas\u00adsive renais\u00adsance in youth min\u00adistry over the last decade, and there\u2019s tons of arti\u00adcles on the bur\u00adgeon\u00ading evan\u00adgel\u00adi\u00adcal intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals: so why aren\u2019t there more arriv\u00ading at Stan\u00adford? Is it that we strong\u00adly dis\u00adcour\u00adage our gift\u00aded youth from attend\u00ading sec\u00adu\u00adlar schools<\/a> or is mere\u00adly the sad fact that most \u201cChris\u00adt\u00adian\u201d stu\u00addents can\u2019t wait to escape from their youth group<\/a>?<\/p>\n

In any event, if the oth\u00ader elite schools are see\u00ading sim\u00adi\u00adlar trends the intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal future of Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Chris\u00adtian\u00adi\u00adty isn\u2019t look\u00ading par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly robust\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
