That includes those who were con\u00advict\u00aded, cred\u00adi\u00adbly accused and suc\u00adcess\u00adful\u00adly sued, and those who con\u00adfessed or resigned. More of them worked in Texas than in any oth\u00ader state. They left behind more than 700 vic\u00adtims, many of them shunned by their church\u00ades, left to them\u00adselves to rebuild their lives. Some were urged to for\u00adgive their abusers or to get abor\u00adtions. About 220 offend\u00aders have been con\u00advict\u00aded or took plea deals, and dozens of cas\u00ades are pend\u00ading.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Part Two: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/investigations\/article\/Southern-Baptist-churches-hired-ministers-accused-13588233.php\">Offend, then repeat<\/a> (Robert Dow\u00adnen, Lise Olsen, and John Tedesco, Hous\u00adton Chron\u00adi\u00adcle): \u201dNo reli\u00adgion is immune to sex\u00adu\u00adal mis\u00adcon\u00adduct in its ranks. But unlike the Roman Catholic Church, which is wrestling with its own sex-abuse scan\u00addal, Bap\u00adtists don\u2019t answer to a pope or bish\u00adop. Local church auton\u00ado\u00admy is a bedrock foun\u00adda\u00adtion of Bap\u00adtist faith. There\u2019s no dio\u00adcese that assigns priests to a parish. Instead, each church is respon\u00adsi\u00adble for ordain\u00ading and hir\u00ading its own min\u00adis\u00adters.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Part Three: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/investigations\/article\/All-too-often-Southern-Baptist-youth-pastors-13588292.php\">Prey\u00ading On Teens<\/a> (Robert Dow\u00adnen, Lise Olsen, and John Tedesco, Hous\u00adton Chron\u00adi\u00adcle): \u201cMore than 100 South\u00adern Bap\u00adtists described as for\u00admer youth pas\u00adtors or youth min\u00adis\u00adters are now in prison, are reg\u00adis\u00adtered as sex offend\u00aders or have been charged with sex crimes, the news\u00adpa\u00adpers found. Their most com\u00admon tar\u00adgets were teenage girls and boys, though small\u00ader chil\u00addren also were molest\u00aded, some\u00adtimes in pas\u00adtors\u2019 stud\u00adies and Sun\u00adday school rooms.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.russellmoore.com\/2019\/02\/10\/southern-baptists-and-the-scandal-of-church-sexual-abuse\/\">South\u00adern Bap\u00adtists and the Scan\u00addal of Church Sex\u00adu\u00adal Abuse<\/a> (Rus\u00adsell Moore, per\u00adson\u00adal blog): \u201c<em>Jesus does not cov\u00ader up sin with\u00adin the tem\u00adple of his pres\u00adence. He brings every\u00adthing hid\u00adden to light. We should too. When we down\u00adplay or cov\u00ader over what has hap\u00adpened in the name of Jesus to those he loves we are not \u201cpro\u00adtect\u00ading\u201d Jesus\u2019 rep\u00adu\u00adta\u00adtion. We are instead fight\u00ading Jesus him\u00adself.<\/em> No church should be frus\u00adtrat\u00aded by the <em>Hous\u00adton Chronicle\u2019s<\/em> report\u00ading, but should thank God for it. The Judg\u00adment Seat of Christ will be far less ret\u00adi\u00adcent than a news\u00adpa\u00adper series to uncov\u00ader what should nev\u00ader have been hid\u00adden.\u201d \u2014 he also wrote an op-ed for the New York Times a few days after this: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/13\/opinion\/southern-baptists-sexual-abuse.html\">South\u00adern Bap\u00adtists Face Their #MeToo Moment<\/a> (Rus\u00adsell Moore, New York Times).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/albertmohler.com\/2019\/02\/11\/reality-sexual-abuse-hits-home-happened-now\/\">The Real\u00adi\u00adty of Sex\u00adu\u00adal Abuse Hits Home: What Hap\u00adpened? What Do We Do Now?<\/a> (Al Mohler, per\u00adson\u00adal blog): \u201cSouth\u00adern Bap\u00adtists, by instinct, have prac\u00adticed a form of moral\u00adism that views sex\u00adu\u00adal mis\u00adbe\u00adhav\u00adior as an iso\u00adlat\u00aded event\u2014deal with it and move on. This sim\u00adplis\u00adtic moral\u00adism reduces sex\u00adu\u00adal abuse and gloss\u00ades over the sever\u00adi\u00adty of the crime. Sex\u00adu\u00adal abuse is not an iso\u00adlat\u00aded act of mis\u00adbe\u00adhav\u00adior; it leaves in its wake scarred vic\u00adtims as well as mali\u00adcious vic\u00adtim\u00adiz\u00aders. Abuse of this nature snow\u00adballs.\u201d This arti\u00adcle has some insight\u00adful com\u00admen\u00adtary on the unique chal\u00adlenges fac\u00ading the South\u00adern Bap\u00adtists because of their struc\u00adture.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2019\/02\/evangelical-apocalypse\">Evan\u00adgel\u00adi\u00adcal Apoc\u00ada\u00adlypse<\/a> (Dale M. Coul\u00adter, First Things): \u201cAs one denom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal leader point\u00aded out to me, min\u00adis\u00adters brought up on charges and dis\u00admissed from one denom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion have sim\u00adply gone to anoth\u00ader for cre\u00adden\u00adtials. It\u2019s not just laity who take advan\u00adtage of evan\u00adgel\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adis\u00adm\u2019s big tent to move around. These open net\u00adworks for min\u00adis\u00adte\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal move\u00adment from one part of evan\u00adgel\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adism to anoth\u00ader allow sex\u00adu\u00adal abusers to escape judg\u00adment and start over. We don\u2019t need a data\u00adbase of sex\u00adu\u00adal abusers for the South\u00adern Bap\u00adtist Con\u00adven\u00adtion, we need it for evan\u00adgel\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adism as a whole.\u201d I don\u2019t know how fea\u00adsi\u00adble that spe\u00adcif\u00adic sug\u00adges\u00adtion is, but I do know Coul\u00adter is point\u00ading out a real and very hard-to-address prob\u00adlem.<\/li>\n<li>In a dif\u00adfer\u00adent neck of the woods: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2019\/02\/sean-omalley-pope-francis-catholic-church-sex-abuse\/582658\/\">Why Does the Catholic Church Keep Fail\u00ading on Sex\u00adu\u00adal Abuse?<\/a> (Emma Green, The Atlantic): \u201cO\u2019Malley\u2019s career, with all of its suc\u00adcess\u00ades and frus\u00adtra\u00adtions, illu\u00admi\u00adnates why the sex-abuse cri\u00adsis has once again sub\u00adsumed the Catholic Church\u2014and why this insti\u00adtu\u00adtion, one of the world\u2019s great moral author\u00adi\u00adties, has been inca\u00adpable of solv\u00ading one of the most moral\u00adly straight\u00adfor\u00adward prob\u00adlems of our time.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/2019\/2\/12\/18215534\/bill-gates-global-poverty-chart\">Bill Gates tweet\u00aded out a chart and sparked a huge debate about glob\u00adal pover\u00adty<\/a> (Dylan Matthews, Vox): \u201cHick\u00adel argues that focus\u00ading on data show\u00ading declines in glob\u00adal pover\u00adty does polit\u00adi\u00adcal work on behalf of glob\u00adal cap\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adism, defend\u00ading an inher\u00adent\u00adly unjust glob\u00adal sys\u00adtem that has failed res\u00adi\u00addents of rich and poor nations alike.
