As we read through Cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion of Dis\u00adci\u00adpline by Richard Fos\u00adter, I\u2019ll post my thoughts here (which will large\u00adly con\u00adsist of excerpts I found insight\u00adful). I\u2019m dou\u00adbling up this week because I missed last week\u2019s sum\u00adma\u00adry due to my trav\u00adels. With this update we should be back on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, we exam\u00adine the dis\u00adci\u00adpline of sub\u00admis\u00adsion, which entails the rejec\u00adtion of the lust for pow\u00ader and even the pre\u00adsump\u00adtion of auton\u00ado\u00admy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSub\u00admis\u00adsion is an eth\u00adi\u00adcal theme that runs the gamut of the New Tes\u00adta\u00adment. It is a pos\u00adture oblig\u00ada\u00adtory upon all Chris\u00adtians: men as well as women, fathers as well as chil\u00addren, mas\u00adters as well as slaves. We are com\u00admand\u00aded to live a life of sub\u00admis\u00adsion because Jesus lived a life of sub\u00admis\u00adsion, not because we are in a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar place or sta\u00adtion in life. Self-denial is a pos\u00adture fit\u00adting for all those who fol\u00adlow the cru\u00adci\u00adfied Lord\u2026. the one and only com\u00adpelling rea\u00adson for sub\u00admis\u00adsion is the exam\u00adple of Jesus.\u201d<\/p>Richard Fos\u00adter, Cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion of Dis\u00adci\u00adpline page 117<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Our cul\u00adture cel\u00ade\u00adbrates the autonomous indi\u00advid\u00adual, and con\u00adcepts such as \u201cself-actu\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtion\u201d and \u201cself-ful\u00adfill\u00adment\u201d are per\u00adva\u00adsive. Our soci\u00adety\u2019s main atti\u00adtude toward the self is to indulge it, but Scrip\u00adture\u2019s main atti\u00adtude toward the self is to deny it. The habit of sub\u00admis\u00adsion denies self in a pow\u00ader\u00adful way, and so two of the main oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties we have to deny self are to sub\u00admit to God and to sub\u00admit to legit\u00adi\u00admate human author\u00adi\u00adties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sub\u00admit\u00adting our\u00adselves to God means obey\u00ading His Word, espe\u00adcial\u00adly when we are puz\u00adzled by His com\u00admands. There is a very real sense in which we are not sub\u00admit\u00adting until we dis\u00adagree (or at least don\u2019t under\u00adstand). When we do what God says because it makes sense to us, it is not God we are obey\u00ading but our\u00adselves. Med\u00adi\u00adtat\u00ading on Romans 12 might prove help\u00adful as you think about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sub\u00admit\u00adting our\u00adselves to legit\u00adi\u00admate human author\u00adi\u00adties means that we hon\u00ador gov\u00adern\u00admen\u00adtal lead\u00aders even when we dis\u00adagree with them. Dis\u00adagree\u00ading with our polit\u00adi\u00adcal lead\u00aders is not uncom\u00admon; in fact, I can\u00adnot imag\u00adine a Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia vot\u00ader who is simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly thrilled with both gov\u00ader\u00adnor Gavin New\u00adsome and pres\u00adi\u00addent Don\u00adald Trump. Nonethe\u00adless, we hon\u00ador and pray for both. Not only do we hon\u00ador and pray for them, we also obey them when they are act\u00ading with\u00adin their sphere of author\u00adi\u00adty. Like\u00adwise, we hon\u00ador spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal author\u00adi\u00adties such as pas\u00adtors and obey them when they are act\u00ading with\u00adin their sphere of author\u00adi\u00adty. We also hon\u00ador our par\u00adents and obey them when they are act\u00ading with\u00adin their sphere of author\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I keep repeat\u00ading \u201cwhen they are act\u00ading with\u00adin their sphere of author\u00adi\u00adty\u201d because keep\u00ading that in mind is what pro\u00adtects us from abu\u00adsive and tox\u00adic sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions. Every human author\u00adi\u00adty has lim\u00adits placed upon them, and when they step out\u00adside of their realm they should not be obeyed. Tyran\u00adni\u00adcal gov\u00adern\u00adments, cultish reli\u00adgions, con\u00adtrol\u00adling work\u00adplaces, tox\u00adic fam\u00adi\u00adly sys\u00adtems \u2014 wise Chris\u00adtians flee from or stand against these things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spend time think\u00ading Bib\u00adli\u00adcal\u00adly about the prop\u00ader spheres of human author\u00adi\u00adty \u2014 it will bear great fruit in your life. Some\u00adtimes, like in Acts 5:27\u201329, the point is made very clear \u2014 the gov\u00adern\u00adment has no right to for\u00adbid you to obey God (I\u2019m look\u00ading at you, Chi\u00adna). But oth\u00ader times the les\u00adson is an impli\u00adca\u00adtion of the text rather than its main point. For exam\u00adple, Acts 5:3\u20134 pre\u00adsup\u00adpos\u00ades that Peter would have had no right to com\u00admand Ananais to sell his prop\u00ader\u00adty or to give all of the pro\u00adceeds to the church. That illus\u00adtrates an impor\u00adtant lim\u00adit on spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal author\u00adi\u00adty. These are just two exam\u00adples from one chap\u00adter of Scrip\u00adture \u2014 I encour\u00adage you to keep the con\u00adcept of spheres of author\u00adi\u00adty in the back of your mind as you read Scrip\u00adture.
