We\u2019re pick\u00ading our books now, and I thought some of you might be inter\u00adest\u00aded in the guide\u00adlines we\u2019re using. I sort of made these up and mod\u00adi\u00adfied them based on the feed\u00adback I received.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<b>Fre\u00adquen\u00adcy<\/b><br>\nLet\u2019s start off with a book every two months. This will give us plen\u00adty of time to pur\u00adsue our own read\u00ading with\u00adout short\u00adchang\u00ading our staff reads. We can always adjust the time lat\u00ader if we need to.<\/p>\n<p><b>Selec\u00adtion<\/b><br>\nWe make our list up two full cycles in advance (one whole year). We each get to pro\u00adpose 4 books, and then we each rank the result\u00ading list of 12. We tal\u00adly the votes using an inter\u00adnet script (Con\u00addorcet method for any vot\u00ading geeks out there). The top six books win. We\u2019ll decide the order in which the win\u00adners will be read infor\u00admal\u00adly, try\u00ading to alter\u00adnate old\u00ader books with new\u00ader books.<\/p>\n<p><b>Guide\u00adlines<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> We have to pro\u00adpose books that we have not read yet. Don\u2019t pick some\u00adthing you loved and think it will be good for every\u00adone else. The point of this exer\u00adcise is per\u00adson\u00adal growth.<\/li>\n<li>Hav\u00ading said that, it\u2019s okay if some\u00adone else pro\u00adpos\u00ades a book that you have already read and the team selects it. In that case, you don\u2019t have to reread it\u2013skimming will do.<\/li>\n<li> Don\u2019t try to impress any\u00adone. No need to pick aca\u00add\u00ade\u00adm\u00adic phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy or any\u00adthing like that\u2013unless you real\u00adly want to read it.<\/li>\n<li> Let\u2019s try to alter\u00adnate between new books and books old\u00ader than we are. This isn\u2019t a rigid rule, but an aspi\u00adra\u00adtion.<\/li>\n<li>Fresh\u00adness is good when we\u2019re talk\u00ading about some\u00adthing based on research, and age is good when we\u2019re talk\u00ading about some\u00adthing based on reflec\u00adtion. If you want us to think about sci\u00adence or cul\u00adture get a new book. If you want us to think about God or life get an old\u00ader book. Unless you real\u00adly don\u2019t want to\u2013these are guide\u00adlines and not rules. \ud83d\ude09<\/li>\n<li>The books can be about any\u00adthing, but let\u2019s keep fic\u00adtion to a min\u00adi\u00admum.<\/li>\n<li>Noth\u00ading over 500 pages with\u00adout first clear\u00ading it with every\u00adone else.<\/li>\n<li>Noth\u00ading over $30 with\u00adout clear\u00ading it first with every\u00adone else.<\/li>\n<li>If you want, you can pro\u00adpose mul\u00adti\u00adple short books as a sin\u00adgle rec\u00adom\u00admen\u00adda\u00adtion (less than 200 pages total).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>After Read\u00ading<\/b><br>\nFol\u00adlow\u00ading the read\u00ading of the book, by a spec\u00adi\u00adfied dead\u00adline, the choos\u00ader will com\u00adpose a few (3\u20135) ques\u00adtions for group dis\u00adcus\u00adsion either in per\u00adson, over the phone or online.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Any\u00adway, it\u2019s not too ele\u00adgant but it looks as though it will serve us well.
