I hoped to rec\u00adon\u00adcile two com\u00adpet\u00ading nar\u00adra\u00adtives of the evan\u00adgel\u00adi\u00adcal church\u2019s role in the fave\u00adlas. For the country\u2019s poor, all but neglect\u00aded by the state, church\u00ades serve not only as a source of spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal sal\u00adva\u00adtion but as a haven of last resort\u2014a place to find com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, job tips, and coun\u00adsel\u00ading, or sim\u00adply to gath\u00ader and sing with\u00adout fear of vio\u00adlence. Yet sto\u00adries of crooked pas\u00adtors abound in the new Brazil; in recent years, sev\u00ader\u00adal have been caught trans\u00adport\u00ading weapons for the drug trade. While many gang mem\u00adbers find in Jesus the courage to quit this life, oth\u00aders seem to have inter\u00adnal\u00adized a skewed set of bib\u00adli\u00adcal lessons, even com\u00admit\u00adting acts of vio\u00adlence in Jesus\u2019 name.\u201d<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/thedispatch.com\/p\/religious-liberty-not-just-for-social\">Reli\u00adgious Lib\u00ader\u00adty: Not Just for Social Con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtives<\/a> (David French, The Dis\u00adpatch): \u201cThe beau\u00adty of civ\u00adil lib\u00ader\u00adties case law is that each law\u00adful exer\u00adcise of lib\u00ader\u00adty rein\u00adforces anoth\u00ader. So it is with this case. Pro\u00adgres\u00adsives will like\u00adly cheer that these four activists will escape pun\u00adish\u00adment for sav\u00ading immi\u00adgrant lives. And which cas\u00ades helped them win? One of them was <em>Hob\u00adby Lob\u00adby<\/em>\u2014an asser\u00adtion of reli\u00adgious free\u00addom by Chris\u00adt\u00adian con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtives against the Oba\u00adma administration\u2019s con\u00adtra\u00adcep\u00adtion man\u00addate, a cause that many pro\u00adgres\u00adsives despised.\u201d<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/article\/2020\/02\/loving-to-know\">Lov\u00ading to Know<\/a> (N.T. Wright, First Things): \u201cThe sci\u00aden\u00adtist may be fas\u00adci\u00adnat\u00aded by the way a can\u00adcer cell grows, but that fas\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion will increase his deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion to stop it in its tracks. The his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan may be intrigued by the caus\u00ades of the First World War, but she may well hope that her inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtion of the com\u00adplex tan\u00adgle of moti\u00adva\u00adtions will help us spot future warn\u00ading signs. And the par\u00adent who enjoys watch\u00ading the child climb\u00ading a tree will, as a mat\u00adter of love, simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly affirm the child\u2019s free\u00addom and seek to mit\u00adi\u00adgate any clear dan\u00adger. Love is always on the look\u00adout.\u201d This arti\u00adcle is a lit\u00adtle uneven but very insight\u00adful at places.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/156000\/educated-fools-democrats-misunderstand-politics-social-class\">Edu\u00adcat\u00aded Fools<\/a> (Thomas Geoghe\u00adgan, The New Repub\u00adlic): \u201cMer\u00adi\u00adtoc\u00adra\u00adcy has its own deep state\u2014with secrets unknown even to those of us who are part of it. And the worst thing is the way it can taunt the work\u00ading class with the ideals of the Enlight\u00aden\u00adment, when it is we mer\u00adi\u00adto\u00adcrat\u00adic lib\u00ader\u00adals who have the great\u00adest inter\u00adest in lim\u00adit\u00ading its spread. We think we\u2019re act\u00ading in such good faith in push\u00ading for col\u00adlege and even com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty col\u00adlege edu\u00adca\u00adtion. But real sal\u00adva\u00adtion can be offered only to a few, on a retail, not a whole\u00adsale, basis: Instead of rais\u00ading peo\u00adple up col\u00adlec\u00adtive\u00adly, we\u2019re being care\u00adful to do it one diplo\u00adma at a time.\u2029\u201d<ul><li>The author\u2019s blind\u00adness to the con\u00adtin\u00adued exis\u00adtence of church\u00ades stood out to me. \u201cThere is no foothold left in big cities, or any\u00adplace else where the glob\u00adal win\u00adners live, for high school grad\u00adu\u00adates to exer\u00adcise even a tiny bit of pow\u00ader. <b>There\u2019s no church to slot into as a dea\u00adcon\u2026<\/b>\u201d (empha\u00adsis added) Fact check: church\u00ades are flour\u00adish\u00ading in big cities.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/religionunplugged.com\/news\/2020\/2\/4\/nigeria-is-a-killing-field-of-defenseless-christians\">Nige\u00adria is a killing field of defense\u00adless Chris\u00adtians<\/a> (Reli\u00adgion Unplugged): \u201cThe list of Niger\u00adian Chris\u00adtians slaugh\u00adtered, shot dead, hacked to death, stran\u00adgled and tor\u00adtured to death, grows by the day. Based on reports from its state chap\u00adters and local media, CAN esti\u00admates 5 mil\u00adlion peo\u00adple marched in 28 of Nigeria\u2019s 36 states on Sun\u00adday.\u201d<\/li>\n  <\/ul><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theatlantic.com\/amp\/article\/605365\/\">The Ene\u00admies of Writ\u00ading<\/a> (George Pack\u00ader, The Atlantic): \u201cFear breeds self-cen\u00adsor\u00adship, and self-cen\u00adsor\u00adship is more insid\u00adi\u00adous than the state-imposed kind, because it\u2019s a sur\u00ader way of killing the impulse to think, which requires an unfet\u00adtered mind. A writer can still write while hid\u00ading from the thought police. But a writer who car\u00adries the thought police around in his head, who always feels com\u00adpelled to ask: <em>Can I say this?
