Two par\u00adents in a home bring in the earnings\u00e2\u20ac\u201dor at least the earn\u00adings <em>capac\u00adi\u00adty<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u201dof two adults. And so, in a very straight\u00adfor\u00adward way, we see that kids grow\u00ading up in sin\u00adgle-moth\u00ader homes are five times more like\u00adly to live in pover\u00adty than kids grow\u00ading up in mar\u00adried par\u00adent homes. (Kids in sin\u00adgle-father homes are three times as like\u00adly to live in pover\u00adty.) Some of that reflects the fact that peo\u00adple with low\u00ader lev\u00adels of edu\u00adca\u00adtion or income are more like\u00adly to become sin\u00adgle par\u00adents. But even if you com\u00adpare across moms of the same edu\u00adca\u00adtion group, you see that kids who grow up in a house\u00adhold with two par\u00adents have house\u00adhold incomes that are about twice as high. That means that those par\u00adents are pay\u00ading for things like a nicer house in a safe neigh\u00adbor\u00adhood with good school dis\u00adtricts. But they also spend more time with their kids. We see that kids who grow up with mar\u00adried par\u00adents have more parental time invest\u00aded in them: read\u00ading to your kid, talk\u00ading to your kid, dri\u00adving your kids to activ\u00adi\u00adties. By con\u00adtrast, the old news\u00adroom ide\u00adol\u00ado\u00adgy seems cyn\u00adi\u00adcal on its sur\u00adface. It used to bug me that my edi\u00adtors at the <em>Times <\/em>assumed every word out of the mouth of any per\u00adson in pow\u00ader was a lie. And the pur\u00adsuit of objec\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty can seem rep\u00adtil\u00adian, even nihilis\u00adtic, in its abju\u00adra\u00adtion of a fixed posi\u00adtion in moral con\u00adtests. But the basis of that old news\u00adroom approach was ide\u00adal\u00adis\u00adtic: the notion that pow\u00ader ulti\u00admate\u00adly lies in truth and ideas, and that the cit\u00adi\u00adzens of a plu\u00adral\u00adis\u00adtic democ\u00adra\u00adcy, not lead\u00aders of any sort, must be trust\u00aded to judge both.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This one is very long but I found it com\u00adpelling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/12\/09\/conservatives-sue-law-firms-dei\/\" target=\"_blank\">Con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtives are suing law firms over diver\u00adsi\u00adty efforts.
