If you read something fascinating please pass it my&nbsp;way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is volume 441, which is 21<sup>2<\/sup> and  also the smallest square which is the sum of six consecutive cubes: 1<sup>3<\/sup> + 2<sup>3<\/sup> + 3<sup>3<\/sup> + 4<sup>3<\/sup> + 5<sup>3<\/sup> + 6<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No amusing stuff at the end this week. I\u2019ve been busy traveling and am vastly underamused.\ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Things Glen Found Interesting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"simple-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mereorthodoxy.com\/blessed-are-those-who-mourn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blessed Are Those Who Mourn<\/a> (T. M. Suffield, Mere Orthodoxy): \u201cPennington describes the beatitudes as \u2018divine gold of priceless worth\u2019 that \u2018appears to be only darkness.\u2019 Like wisdom sayings they don\u2019t give up their gold immediately. They are supposed to shock us and I fear we have become overly familiar with them. Jesus is arguing that flourishing, the good life, <em>requires<\/em> mourning. The thing the modern world wants to avoid most, sadness, is somehow a key to a good life. To us this appears to be profoundly non-flourishing. The shock we should feel is part of how the beatitudes are meant to&nbsp;work.\u201d&nbsp;<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is a wise and perceptive essay. 10\/10 recommend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/americanaffairsjournal.org\/2024\/02\/how-feminism-ends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How Feminism Ends<\/a> (Ginevra Davis, American Affairs Journal): \u201cIf the goal of feminism is to improve the lot of females, then there are dozens of changes, social and scientific, that could help alleviate their condition. But if the goal of feminism is perfect sexual equality\u2014that no mind should ever have to make sacrifices, in productivity or love, because of its body\u2014then the end of feminism must, necessarily, mean the end of females. There is no other&nbsp;way.\u201d&nbsp;<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A long but fabulous essay. It\u2019s by a Stanford grad, incidentally \u2014 this is the same author who wrote about Stanford\u2019s war on fun a while back. I don\u2019t think we ever crossed paths when she was a student.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vaguely related (but interesting enough in its own right that I would have included it regardless): <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2024\/02\/men-women-brain-organization-patterns.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stanford Medicine study identifies distinct brain organization patterns in women and men<\/a> (Stanford Medicine): \u201cA new study by Stanford Medicine investigators unveils a new artificial intelligence model that was more than 90% successful at determining whether scans of brain activity came from a woman or a man. The findings, published Feb. 20 in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,<\/em> help resolve a long-term controversy about whether reliable sex differences exist in the human brain and suggest that understanding these differences may be critical to addressing neuropsychiatric conditions that affect women and men differently.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/17\/us-news\/foster-kid-who-went-to-yale-says-family-trumps-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I\u2019m a foster kid who went to Yale \u2014and I think two-parent families are more important than college<\/a> (Rikki Schlott, New York Post): \u201cEven though I was always academically inclined, the level of disorder in my life was weighing me down so much that I wasn\u2019t in a position to fully exploit my own capabilities.\u2026 I had a class where a professor administered an anonymous poll. Out of the 20 students, 18 of them had been raised by both of their birth parents. That just floored me because where I grew up it was&nbsp;zero.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bydamo.la\/p\/kinda-nice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kinda Nice<\/a> (Damola Morenikeji, Substack): \u201cA kind person will help you understand reality as it is, prompt you to reflect, and nudge you to fine-tune your position till you get to a place where your resolution is helpful for you. A nice person will tell you what feels good \u2014 and often what you think you want to hear at that time \u2014 even if it doesn\u2019t help you move past that situation.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/crisismagazine.com\/opinion\/our-unhappy-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our Unhappy Youth<\/a> (Anthony Esolen, Crisis Magazine): \u201cInstead of asking why they <em>are unhappy, <\/em>we might ask why they <em>aren\u2019t happy<\/em>,which might in turn lead us to ask <em>what they have to be happy about. <\/em>That might reveal to us in all its drabness what appears to be the most antihuman way of life that any civilization has ever settled into: becalmed without rest, somber without sobriety, abstracted without thought, licentious without even the animal vigor of license; ever shouting, but without good&nbsp;cheer.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/app-link\/post?publication_id=260347&amp;post_id=141970660&amp;utm_source=post-email-title&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=true&amp;r=14n8uw&amp;token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjo2ODI2OTIwOCwicG9zdF9pZCI6MTQxOTcwNjYwLCJpYXQiOjE3MDg3MTY3OTMsImV4cCI6MTcxMTMwODc5MywiaXNzIjoicHViLTI2MDM0NyIsInN1YiI6InBvc3QtcmVhY3Rpb24ifQ.22o_9CTQGSDTl6GTXeSaX_VqVKyKzNRkLuWYegUySsE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Are \u2018Islamists in Charge of Britain\u2019?<\/a> (Konstantin Kisin, The Free Press): \u201cIn one sense, the Speaker\u2019s decision was not unfounded. MPs really are at risk. Only weeks prior, Mike Freer, a Conservative MP who represents a constituency with a significant Jewish population, announced that he would not be seeking reelection because of threats to him and his family over his support for Israel. Explaining his decision, he revealed that he had started wearing stab-proof vests when meeting constituents. In 2021 another Conservative MP, Sir David Amess, was stabbed to death by an Islamist at such a meeting. In 2017, an Islamist terrorist mowed down pedestrians before stabbing an unarmed police officer to death outside the gates of Parliament.\u201d&nbsp;<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recommended by an alumnus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lux-magazine.com\/article\/gazas-past\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gaza\u2019s Past Is Calling<\/a> (Sarah Aziza, Lux Magazine): \u201cComing up in the 1990s and 2000s, the word \u2018Gaza\u2019 was already synonymous with \u2018Hamas\u2019 \u2014 a term which, I quickly learned, rendered an entire population monstrous. I am ashamed I often mumbled the name \u2014 <em>Gaza<\/em> \u2014 when white Americans asked about my family origins. It hurt to watch them flinch, to see in their cold stares the impossibility that Gaza could ever mean <em>mothers, banana, joy<\/em>. The world they erased \u2014 and erase \u2014 my father\u2019s fingers, drawing in the sand. My grandmother\u2019s pigeons, her particular way of brewing tea. The thousand, thousand feet that have run into the Mediterranean, each laughter a different splash. Gaza, for me, means <em>teeming<\/em> \u2014 a cruel over-concentration of bodies, yes, but at the same time, one of the world\u2019s densest points of human&nbsp;love.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Why Do You Send This&nbsp;Email?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the time of King David, the tribe of Issachar produced shrewd warriors \u201cwho understood the times and knew what Israel should do\u201d (1 Chron 12:32). In a similar way, we need to become wise people whose faith interacts with the world. I pray this email gives you greater insight, so that you may continue the tradition of Issachar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Disclaimer<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chi Alpha is not a partisan organization. The upshot: you should not assume I agree with everything an author says in an article I mention, much less things the author has said in other articles (although if I strongly disagree with something in the article I\u2019ll usually mention it).
