With so much at stake, it is so easy to become par\u00ada\u00adlyzed by inde\u00adci\u00adsion. But per\u00adhaps what I would have want\u00aded to hear when I was dither\u00ading was some\u00adthing like this: Hav\u00ading a child has been extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary.\u2026 And for some rea\u00adson, I feel almost embar\u00adrassed to admit how much I love being a moth\u00ader. I spent my adult life until now with this idea that I was dif\u00adfer\u00adent from \u2014 and maybe even a lit\u00adtle supe\u00adri\u00ador to \u2014 my peers who chose to spend time build\u00ading their fam\u00adi\u00adlies. I was so wor\u00adried about what a child would mean for my career. But what I did not antic\u00adi\u00adpate was that what I would want itself would change.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/28\/opinion\/wolfgang-streeck-populism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This Mav\u00ader\u00adick Thinker Is the Karl Marx of Our Time<\/a> (Christo\u00adpher Cald\u00adwell, New York Times): \u201cMr. Streeck has a clear vision of some\u00adthing para\u00addox\u00adi\u00adcal about the neolib\u00ader\u00adal project: For the glob\u00adal econ\u00ado\u00admy to be \u2018free,\u2019 it must be con\u00adstrained. What the pro\u00adpo\u00adnents of neolib\u00ader\u00adal\u00adism mean by a free mar\u00adket is a dereg\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded mar\u00adket. But get\u00adting to dereg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion is trick\u00adi\u00ader than it looks because in free soci\u00adeties, reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtions are the result of people\u2019s sov\u00ader\u00adeign right to make their own rules. The more demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic the world\u2019s soci\u00adeties are, the more idio\u00adsyn\u00adcrat\u00adic they will be, and the more their eco\u00adnom\u00adic rules will diverge. But that is exact\u00adly what busi\u00adness\u00ades can\u00adnot tol\u00ader\u00adate \u2014 at least not under glob\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtion. Mon\u00adey and goods must be able to move fric\u00adtion\u00adless\u00adly and effi\u00adcient\u00adly across bor\u00adders. This requires a uni\u00adform set of laws. Some\u00adhow, democ\u00adra\u00adcy is going to have to give way.\u201d\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cald\u00adwell is an inter\u00adest\u00ading thinker, so as soon as I saw his byline I knew I had to read the arti\u00adcle. Worth a pon\u00adder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/24\/opinion\/gay-marriage-religion-theology-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018A God Who Con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly Sur\u00adpris\u00ades Us\u2019: A Q&amp;A With a The\u00adolo\u00adgian Who Changed His Mind About Gay Mar\u00adriage<\/a> (Peter Wehn\u00ader, New York Times): \u201c\u2026I would say that the way I was appeal\u00ading to the Bible or the way I was inter\u00adpret\u00ading the Bible was too nar\u00adrow\u00adly focused on the few texts in Scrip\u00adture that do say some\u00adthing explic\u00adit\u00adly about homo\u00adsex\u00adu\u00adal rela\u00adtion\u00adships. The dic\u00adtum in Leviti\u00adcus is that for a man to lie with a man as with a woman is an abom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion. And those texts had a cer\u00adtain impact on my opin\u00adion. But I think I was I was far too nar\u00adrow in the way I thought about how the Bible speaks to issues like this. What I came to think over time is that what the Bible shows is not some iso\u00adlat\u00aded proof texts or iso\u00adlat\u00aded state\u00adments of law, but it shows us a much big\u00adger pic\u00adture of God as a God who con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly sur\u00adpris\u00ades us, con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly sur\u00adpris\u00ades his peo\u00adple with the scope of gen\u00aderos\u00adi\u00adty and grace and mer\u00adcy.\u201d\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is one of many reveal\u00ading moments in this inter\u00adview. Hays stopped believ\u00ading what the Bible actu\u00adal\u00adly says in favor of what he takes the deep\u00ader mes\u00adsage of the Bible to be. It\u2019s as though he sub\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnates the real text of the Bible to the hypo\u00adthet\u00adi\u00adcal text of the Bible in his head.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This arti\u00adcle makes me sad. Shar\u00ading because it\u2019s a clear\u00ader-than-usu\u00adal pre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of an argu\u00adment that I often encounter, and its clar\u00adi\u00adty makes the weak\u00adness\u00ades of the revi\u00adsion\u00adist posi\u00adtion more evi\u00addent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/25\/us\/university-crackdowns-protests-israel-hamas-war.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">How Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties Cracked Down on Pro-Pales\u00adtin\u00adian Activism<\/a> (Isabelle Taft, New York Times): \u201cUni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adties have seen just under 950 protest events this semes\u00adter so far, com\u00adpared to 3,000 last semes\u00adter, accord\u00ading to a log at the Non\u00advi\u00ado\u00adlent Action Lab at Har\u00advard University\u2019s Ash Cen\u00adter. About 50 peo\u00adple have been arrest\u00aded so far this school year at protests on high\u00ader edu\u00adca\u00adtion cam\u00adpus\u00ades, accord\u00ading to num\u00adbers gath\u00adered by The New York Times, com\u00adpared to over 3,000 last semes\u00adter. When stu\u00addents have protest\u00aded this fall, admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtors have often enforced \u2014 to the let\u00adter \u2014 new rules cre\u00adat\u00aded in response to last spring\u2019s unrest.
