It\u2019s a curi\u00adous irony that this ver\u00adbal tech\u00adnol\u00ado\u00adgy is, at root, almost pure\u00adly numer\u00adi\u00adcal. How many spread\u00adsheets? It depends on the mod\u00adel. For the rest of this arti\u00adcle, we\u2019ll focus our ener\u00adgy on OpenAI\u2019s GPT\u20113, released in 2020, which served as the basic \u2018engine\u2019 of the break\u00adout prod\u00aduct Chat\u00adG\u00adPT two years lat\u00ader. Though you may well run a more souped-up mod\u00adel today, it works basi\u00adcal\u00adly the same way. GPT\u20113 has 577 spread\u00adsheets. Peo\u00adple in the AI indus\u00adtry call these \u2018ten\u00adsors,\u2019 but it\u2019s fair to think of them as spread\u00adsheets. Each and every cell of each and every spread\u00adsheet is filled with a sin\u00adgle, small num\u00adber (typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly between \u20111.0 and 1.0).\u2026 The very first spreadsheet\u2014which has a spe\u00adcial func\u00adtion we\u2019ll dis\u00adcuss soon\u2014is the biggest: it\u2019s 50,257 rows tall, and 12,288 columns wide. (If you do the math, that\u2019s 617,558,016 tiny num\u00adbers, just in the first spread\u00adsheet.) Then, after the very first spread\u00adsheet, the remain\u00ading 576 set\u00adtle into a repeat\u00ading pat\u00adtern of shapes: first four squares, 12,288 rows and 12,288 columns. Then a wide rec\u00adtan\u00adgle, 12,288 rows tall but four times as wide.
