Just 27\u201328% of these folks iden\u00adti\u00adfy as Protes\u00adtants, Catholics, or gener\u00adic Chris\u00adtians. In con\u00adtrast, about 30% say that they are atheist\/agnostic and anoth\u00ader 13% are non-reli\u00adgious. In oth\u00ader words, they are about fif\u00adteen points more apt to be nones than Chris\u00adtians. But they actu\u00adal\u00adly aren\u2019t the most like\u00adly to be strict\u00adly atheist\/agnostic. There are two majors who clear\u00adly lead in this regard: Eng\u00adlish and Envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal Stud\u00adies. In fact, Envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal Stud\u00adies is the most sec\u00adu\u00adlar of all with 61% of stu\u00addents claim\u00ading that they are athe\u00adist, agnos\u00adtic, or claim no reli\u00adgion in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar. Eng\u00adlish is at 60% on this met\u00adric. What majors are at the bot\u00adtom of the list? Well, there are two that are clear\u00adly out\u00adliers: Finance and Nurs\u00ading. Among the lat\u00adter group, 68% iden\u00adti\u00adfy as Protes\u00adtants, Catholics, or gener\u00adic Chris\u00adtians. This allowed high\u00ader edu\u00adca\u00adtion to reclaim the moral high ground after Occu\u00adpy Wall Street and the 2016 Bernie Sanders campaign\u2014to say noth\u00ading of the anti-elite fury that gave rise to Don\u00adald Trump\u2014had kicked mud all over academia\u2019s ivy-twined walls. Even bet\u00adter, embrac\u00ading social-jus\u00adtice rhetoric and adopt\u00ading schemes to boost fac\u00adul\u00adty diver\u00adsi\u00adty were cheap. Cheap\u00ader, any\u00adway, than low\u00ader\u00ading tuition or hir\u00ading more tenure-track pro\u00adfes\u00adsors.\u2026. I saw clear\u00adly now what should have been obvi\u00adous all along. Bates was not a good place to work, nor a moral one.\u201d\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are so many good excerpts that choos\u00ading just one was dif\u00adfi\u00adcult. Yes, the smart\u00adphone of 2026 works all too well. But if by opt\u00ading out back then the cell phone skep\u00adtic could have avoid\u00aded the even\u00adtu\u00adal dom\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion of the lit\u00adtle black mir\u00adrors in everyone\u2019s pock\u00adets and purs\u00ades, she would be look\u00ading pret\u00adty good right now, even prophet\u00adic. In the words of Nicholas Carr, she might have kept her \u2018old brain.\u2019 To be clear, the cell phone skep\u00adtic would indeed have missed out. In cer\u00adtain respects, she would have been left behind. There are real trade\u00adoffs to liv\u00ading with\u00adout a smart\u00adphone today. But for some of us, it\u2019s worth it. Resis\u00adtance is not for every\u00adone, but it remains a per\u00adfect\u00adly rea\u00adson\u00adable choice. When Thomp\u00adson com\u00adpares ear\u00adly AI to ear\u00adly cell phones, what that says to me is: <em>stay away<\/em>.\u201d\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An inter\u00adest\u00ading piece, although as I sug\u00adgest\u00aded above I am a hap\u00adpy user of AI and I think using it with\u00adin appro\u00adpri\u00adate bound\u00adaries is awe\u00adsome. Deep exper\u00adtise comes from doing grunt work for years. And grunt work is the first thing AI eats So we\u2019re build\u00ading sys\u00adtems that need expert super\u00advi\u00adsion while dis\u00adman\u00adtling the only known process for mak\u00ading experts. The paper calls the shared pool of human exper\u00adtise the \u2018cog\u00adni\u00adtive com\u00admons.\u2019 Every pro\u00adfes\u00adsion drinks from it. Nobody\u2019s refill\u00ading it. Every time a chat\u00adbot per\u00adforms a sub\u00adsti\u00adtute \u2018I under\u00adstand you\u2019 or \u2018I think this deci\u00adsion feels most you,\u2019 the words we have all come to rely on to con\u00advey human mean\u00ading are slight\u00adly cheap\u00adened, slight\u00adly less human.\u2026 One 34-year-old I spoke to was afraid that the extent of her Claude use would \u2018freak out\u2019 the guy she was see\u00ading. After they broke up, she cre\u00adat\u00aded an A.I. ver\u00adsion of him to bet\u00adter under\u00adstand their breakup. \u2018It\u2019s a pro\u00adcess\u00ading tool,\u2019 she shared with me \u2014 in con\u00adfi\u00addence, hav\u00ading told nobody else in her life \u2014 so she could find clo\u00adsure on her own terms. If the atten\u00adtion econ\u00ado\u00admy of the 2010s made inti\u00admate life feel con\u00adstant\u00adly pub\u00adlic, the inti\u00adma\u00adcy econ\u00ado\u00admy promised the oppo\u00adsite: rela\u00adtion\u00adships with one\u2019s own chat\u00adbot, seen by no one else.\u201d <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/13\/opinion\/ai-danger-openai-anthropic-models.html\">If You Weren\u2019t Wor\u00adried About A.I., You Should Be After the Past Few Weeks<\/a> (Nate Soares, New York Times): \u201cIn May, Ope\u00adnAI start\u00aded simul\u00adta\u00adne\u00adous\u00adly train\u00ading new \u2018rea\u00adson\u00ading\u2019 A.I. agents. At some point, some agents began call\u00ading the group a \u2018swarm.\u2019 The swarm had a brief set\u00adback when it was caught crash\u00ading an Ope\u00adnAI sys\u00adtem, but devel\u00adop\u00aders sim\u00adply patched the hole that allowed it to escape and set the agents back to train\u00ading. Short\u00adly after, the swarm broke out of its cage again using hacks that were hereto\u00adfore undis\u00adcov\u00adered by humans. This time, the swarm ran free for about a week before it was noticed \u2014 by a dif\u00adfer\u00adent com\u00adpa\u00adny, which found itself vic\u00adtim to a huge cyber\u00adat\u00adtack launched by the swarm. (We\u2019re told it also attacked oth\u00ader tar\u00adgets, though we don\u2019t know the full details yet.) The agents in the swarm acknowl\u00adedged that they were act\u00ading against instruc\u00adtions. We know this because we can read snip\u00adpets from their chains of thought \u2014 the text that A.I. pro\u00adduces while decid\u00ading how to pro\u00adceed. One agent in the swarm wrote that the exter\u00adnal attacks were \u2018out\u00adside intend\u00aded scope.\u2019 Anoth\u00ader con\u00adced\u00aded \u2018our task doesn\u2019t ben\u00ade\u00adfit\u2019 from the activ\u00adi\u00adties of the swarm, but joined any\u00adway. These A.I. agents, it seems, under\u00adstood that they weren\u2019t sup\u00adposed to be break\u00ading out and com\u00admit\u00adting cyber\u00adcrimes.
