There was no ratio\u00adnal, nat\u00adur\u00adal pro\u00adgres\u00adsion from one to the other\u2014it was as though some unex\u00adplained leap occurred some\u00adwhere in the mid\u00addle, and sud\u00adden\u00adly human life, cob\u00adbled togeth\u00ader from quarks and elec\u00adtrons and the forces of nature, pos\u00adsessed intrin\u00adsic val\u00adue. When I turned to athe\u00adist intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adals for answers, I was sore\u00adly dis\u00adap\u00adpoint\u00aded. Their argu\u00adments offered lit\u00adtle to no help. They usu\u00adal\u00adly assert\u00aded that rights just exist, or make some util\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan argu\u00adment, or effec\u00adtive\u00adly stat\u00aded that harm\u00ading some\u00adone unpro\u00advoked is always wrong just \u2018because.\u2019 I was shocked by how mea\u00adger the philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal under\u00adpin\u00adnings of my val\u00adues were.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n
