This date can be writ\u00adten 3\/14, and 314 are the first three dig\u00adits of the infi\u00adnite\u00adly-long num\u00adber pi.<\/p>\n<p>Any\u00adway, I made a ref\u00ader\u00adence to Pi Day at the begin\u00adning of my mes\u00adsage last night and I asked offhand\u00aded\u00adly if any\u00adone in the audi\u00adence had pi mem\u00ado\u00adrized out to any sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant length \u2014 more than 10 dig\u00adits.<\/p>\n<p>At first I did\u00adn\u2019t see any hands, but then I noticed that every\u00adone was point\u00ading at some\u00adone just out of my field of vision. I turned and John Sill\u00adcox (pic\u00adtured here) had his hand raised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn, how many dig\u00adits do you have pi mem\u00ado\u00adrized out to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c100.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor real? You know the first 100 dig\u00adits of pi?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was pret\u00adty floored. I had thought MAYBE some\u00adone would know the first 10 or 25 dig\u00adits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know that I have no choice but to call you up here and have you recite them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After some cajol\u00ading he agreed and began recit\u00ading the num\u00adbers. One of the graph\u00adics I had for pi day hap\u00adpened to dis\u00adplay the first sev\u00ader\u00adal hun\u00addred num\u00adbers and so we pro\u00adject\u00aded the graph\u00adic behind him while he rat\u00adtled them off. His recall was per\u00adfect.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the bit that I found most inter\u00adest\u00ading about the entire expe\u00adri\u00adence: the response of the audi\u00adence. This is the sort of geeky thing that nor\u00admal\u00adly only I would find cool. But at Stan\u00adford, such dis\u00adplays get a dif\u00adfer\u00adent response. Our Chi Alpha group went wild. One of our rug\u00adby play\u00aders got up and began bow\u00ading to John, cry\u00ading \u201cWe\u2019re not wor\u00adthy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So yeah. That\u2019s what Pi Day at Chi Alpha is like.
