The world lay at my feet then, wait\u00ading to be rev\u00ado\u00adlu\u00adtion\u00adized. I attend\u00aded polit\u00adi\u00adcal meet\u00adings, took class\u00ades on racism and social jus\u00adtice, and immersed myself at the com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty ser\u00advice cen\u00adter. I believed in the pow\u00ader with\u00adin me to make a sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant dif\u00adfer\u00adence in the world. I tutored under\u00adpriv\u00adi\u00adleged ele\u00admen\u00adtary school kids; I ran the day camp at a home\u00adless shel\u00adter; I col\u00adlect\u00aded left\u00adover food to feed the hun\u00adgry. Yet, the more I tried to change the world, the more frus\u00adtrat\u00aded I became. I con\u00adfront\u00aded bureau\u00adcra\u00adcy, apa\u00adthy, and\u2026sin. I began to think that maybe human nature need\u00aded a basic over\u00adhaul.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Dur\u00ading this time I was chal\u00adlenged to read the Bible by a friend of mine. I had come to col\u00adlege hat\u00ading the Bible. I thought it was sex\u00adist, homo\u00adpho\u00adbic and rigid\u00adly self-right\u00adeous \u2014 the basic blue\u00adprint of intol\u00ader\u00adance. You see, I grew up in the \u201cBible Belt.\u201d Through\u00adout high school, most of the Chris\u00adtians I encoun\u00adtered were more con\u00adcerned about knock\u00ading some sense into me with the Bible than they were con\u00adcerned about explain\u00ading to me what its pages con\u00adtained. Most were vocal about their con\u00advic\u00adtion that I was going straight to hell because of my lib\u00ader\u00adal agen\u00adda. Yet, when my friend in col\u00adlege chal\u00adlenged my actu\u00adal knowl\u00adedge of the Bible (gar\u00adnered from child\u00adhood Sun\u00adday school lessons and the lit\u00ader\u00ada\u00adture class exam\u00adin\u00ading his\u00adto\u00adry\u2019s \u201cgreat works\u201d my fresh\u00adman year), I real\u00adized that I knew very lit\u00adtle about Jesus and His fol\u00adlow\u00aders\u2026<\/p>\n<p>It was pub\u00adlished back in \u201996, so don\u2019t expect to see her walk\u00ading around cam\u00adpus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just ran across an online arti\u00adcle by Heather Williams, who became a believ\u00ader at Stan\u00adford: Over\u00adhaul at Stan\u00adford.
