One of the first Gospels to be doubt\u00aded was Matthew. Church tra\u00addi\u00adtion said it was writ\u00adten by Matthew, a tax col\u00adlec\u00adtor who became a dis\u00adci\u00adple of Jesus, a wit\u00adness to events. Con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive Chris\u00adt\u00adian cler\u00adgy and schol\u00adars said they believe the book of Matthew was writ\u00adten between A.D. 40 and 60, with\u00adin Matthew\u2019s life\u00adtime.<\/i><\/p>\n

But oth\u00ader schol\u00adars con\u00adclud\u00aded the Gospel was\u00adn\u2019t writ\u00adten any ear\u00adli\u00ader than A.D. 85, per\u00adhaps as late as A.D. 135, long after Matthew\u2019s death. If the author was\u00adn\u2019t a wit\u00adness, the think\u00ading goes, the Gospel becomes less cred\u00adi\u00adble.<\/p>\n

So to schol\u00adars the dat\u00ading is impor\u00adtant.<\/p>\n

In an essay writ\u00adten for the book Passover and East\u00ader: Ori\u00adgin and His\u00adto\u00adry to Mod\u00adern Times, Israel J. Yuval of Jerusalem\u2019s Hebrew Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty report\u00aded a find in the Tal\u00admud that appears to show Matthew could have been writ\u00adten ear\u00adli\u00ader than some schol\u00adars con\u00adtend.<\/p>\n

Yuval wrote that a lead\u00ading rab\u00adbini\u00adcal schol\u00adar of the time was \u201ccon\u00adsid\u00adered to have authored a sophis\u00adti\u00adcat\u00aded par\u00ado\u00addy of the Gospel accord\u00ading to Matthew.\u201d<\/p>\n

The par\u00ado\u00addy, writ\u00adten by a rab\u00adbi known as Gamaliel, is believed by some well-respect\u00aded lib\u00ader\u00adal Chris\u00adt\u00adian schol\u00adars to have been writ\u00adten about A.D. 73 or ear\u00adli\u00ader.<\/p>\n
