One of the most pop\u00adu\u00adlar arti\u00adcles on our web\u00adsite is Sci\u00aden\u00adtists Who Believe<\/a>, a list\u00ading of influ\u00aden\u00adtial liv\u00ading sci\u00aden\u00adtists who are Chris\u00adtians. Obvi\u00adous\u00adly, this is of inter\u00adest to col\u00adlege stu\u00addents!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I was so excit\u00aded when I ran across an arti\u00adcle in the British paper The Guardian titled Sci\u00adence Can\u00adnot Pro\u00advide All The Answers<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s an inter\u00adest\u00ading excerpt from the mid\u00addle of the arti\u00adcle: mod\u00adern sci\u00adence did not emerge 400 years ago to chal\u00adlenge reli\u00adgion, the ortho\u00addoxy of the past 2,000 years. Gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtions of thinkers and exper\u00adi\u00admenters and observers \u2014 often them\u00adselves church\u00admen \u2014 want\u00aded to explain how God worked his won\u00adders. Mod\u00adern physics began with a desire to explain the clock\u00adwork of God\u2019s cre\u00adation. Mod\u00adern geol\u00ado\u00adgy grew at least part\u00adly out of search\u00ades for evi\u00addence of Noah\u2019s flood. Mod\u00adern biol\u00ado\u00adgy owes much to the urge to mar\u00advel at the intri\u00adca\u00adcy of Divine prov\u00adi\u00addence. <\/i><\/p>\n

But the sci\u00aden\u00adtists \u2014 a word coined only in 1833 \u2014 who hoped to find God some\u00adhow paint\u00aded Him out of the pic\u00adture. By the late 20th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, physi\u00adcists were con\u00adfi\u00addent of the his\u00adto\u00adry of the uni\u00adverse back to the first thou\u00adsandth of a sec\u00adond, and geneti\u00adcists and bio\u00adchemists were cer\u00adtain that all liv\u00ading things could be traced back to some last uni\u00adver\u00adsal com\u00admon ances\u00adtor that lived per\u00adhaps 3.5bn years ago. A few things \u2014 what actu\u00adal\u00adly hap\u00adpened in the Big Bang; how liv\u00ading, repli\u00adcat\u00ading things emerged from a mud\u00addle of organ\u00adic com\u00adpounds \u2014 remain rid\u00addles. But few now con\u00adsid\u00ader these rid\u00addles to be inca\u00adpable of solu\u00adtions. So although the debate did not start out as sci\u00adence ver\u00adsus reli\u00adgion, that is how many peo\u00adple now see it. <\/p>\n

Para\u00addox\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly, this is not how many sci\u00aden\u00adtists see it. In the US, accord\u00ading to a sur\u00advey pub\u00adlished in Nature in 1997, four out of 10 sci\u00aden\u00adtists believe in God. Just over 45% said they did not believe, and 14.5% described them\u00adselves as doubters or agnos\u00adtics. This ratio of believ\u00aders to non-believ\u00aders had not changed in 80 years. Should any\u00adbody be sur\u00adprised?<\/p>\n

And a great para\u00adgraph from fur\u00adther on: Doubt, expressed most potent\u00adly 3,000 years ago in the bib\u00adli\u00adcal book of Job, is the great\u00adest sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic tool ever invent\u00aded, he says. To do good sci\u00adence, you have to doubt every\u00adthing, includ\u00ading your ideas, your exper\u00adi\u00adments and your con\u00adclu\u00adsions. \u201cPeo\u00adple like Richard Dawkins char\u00adac\u00adterise reli\u00adgion as doubt\u00adless, tub-thump\u00ading, blind cer\u00adtain\u00adty. But it isn\u2019t like that; he knows it is not like that. There is Job, on his ash-heap, doubt\u00ading every\u00adthing, but won\u00adder\u00ading where the light comes from, and how the hail forms.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
