{"id":969,"date":"2002-08-08T19:06:22","date_gmt":"2002-08-09T03:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2002\/08\/08\/a-deist-contrasts-islam-and-christianity\/"},"modified":"2002-08-08T19:06:22","modified_gmt":"2002-08-09T03:06:22","slug":"a-deist-contrasts-islam-and-christianity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/glenandpaula.com\/wordpress\/archives\/2002\/08\/08\/a-deist-contrasts-islam-and-christianity","title":{"rendered":"A Deist Contrasts Islam and Christianity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ran across a very interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lileks.com\/bleats\/archive\/02\/0802\/080102.html#080702\">rant comparing Islam and Christianity<\/a> by a blogger I\u2019d never heard of called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lileks.com\/bleats\/\">James Lileks<\/a> (I found the link on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogdex.media.mit.edu\/\">blogdex<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At one point, Mr. Lileks identifies himself thusly <i>I am a Deist, which means EVERYONE disagrees with me.<\/i> <\/p>\n<p>Translation: a lot of his underlying assumptions will differ from yours, but you should still read the piece. He puts some very important points in a very direct way.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s his opening statement:<br>\n<i>There are two ways for a religion to approach life:<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A) Everything is permitted except that which is forbidden; over time, we work out the details as the situations arise.<\/p>\n<p>B) Everything is forbidden except that which is permitted, and we will work out the details in advance.<\/p>\n<p>After an opening like that, how can you not read the&nbsp;rest?<\/p>\n<p>(there\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/littlegreenfootballs.com\/weblog\/?entry=3694\">similar diatribe<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlegreenfootballs\/\">Little Green Footballs<\/a>, although it\u2019s not as reflective it does have the virtue of a very active comments section)<\/p>\n<p><i>I added this next bit on 8\/9\/2002<\/i><br>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mcj.blogspot.com\/2002_08_04_mcj_archive.html#80037540\">Ever wonder what an Episcopalian terrorist would look&nbsp;like?<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I ran across a very interesting rant comparing Islam and Christianity by a blogger I\u2019d never heard of called James Lileks (I found the link on blogdex).
