For exam\u00adple<\/p>\n<p><i>To say we live in a sec\u00adu\u00adlar civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion is to say that God is no longer inescapable. It does\u00adn\u2019t mean that we live in a soci\u00adety from which God has been expelled. I don\u2019t think we ever will live in such a soci\u00adety for very long; the Com\u00admu\u00adnists tried that. But the nature of this mod\u00adern sec\u00adu\u00adlar soci\u00adety is that it\u2019s deeply plur\u00adal. We have to accept that the ulti\u00admate ground\u00ading of the civ\u00adi\u00adliza\u00adtion we share in com\u00admon is up for grabs.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>and lat\u00ader on<\/p>\n<p><i>There is an alter\u00adna\u00adtive reading\u2014namely, that we\u2019re mov\u00ading to a soci\u00adety where more and more the con\u00adsen\u00adsus will be around an unbe\u00adliev\u00ading vari\u00adant of the mod\u00adern social imag\u00adi\u00adnary. But to me this seems to be just a dream. It\u2019s a dream that aris\u00ades among those who are deeply into an athe\u00adist or non-believ\u00ading posi\u00adtion and are con\u00advinced as a mat\u00adter of faith that reli\u00adgion will grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly dis\u00adap\u00adpear and every\u00adone will think as they do. For them, the sec\u00adu\u00adlar world is one in which we all end up agree\u00ading fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal\u00adly that there\u2019s no God, and that agree\u00adment is the basis of every\u00adthing.
